Fuselage rear top deck formers ???
« on: October 01, 2008, 07:45:58 AM »
How do you plot the fuselage formers ?

for the rear top deck, straight line taper in top view
and side view, given the shape of front former
for example, want to draw 4 / 5 formers behind , decreasing in
height and width but keep the shape for sheeting

Forgotten the principle !!

Assuming not being done on a computer, draw what dimensions you have and interpolate the rest...or am I missing something?

Thanks George

What I am asking is how do I scale down each one after the first please ?

I have always used the same curve applied to each smaller former, but

usually have to sand all carefully before sheeting or adding stringers,

wondered if it could be drawn really accurately

Using your PC & printer, you could print the first one full size and then print the succeeding ones, reducing each by (%) according to its corresponding width measured at the base position of each following former. At least that would give you some patterns work with. Of course, this only works if the slope of the turtle deck is a straight line.

Good idea Phil, thank you

I used to do this, using drawing tools , but so long ago

George suggested I "interpolate", which the dictionary does not help with

nowadays I forget if I am going upstairs or downstairs !

I use a drafting template that has circles of different diameters.  Match the width of the bulkhead with the diameter of the circle and complete the half circle.   Seems to work OK-no computer necessary. Shouldn't this thread be in Building Techniques?

The last time I had to do this was on a Jr. Nobler plan. The side and top views are shown, but no formers. I measured what was available at the locations and filled in the rest. Same with the wings. The "rib" pattern was extrapolated from the side view where the wing entered the fuselage. I had to interpolate the rib shape at the tip and root position lengths extrapolated from the plans. Am I using the words incorrectly? For these purposes it means to "fill in" the unknown by using the parts you know.

BTW, I still haven't built that Jr. Nobler.  :(

I go upstairs to the computer and downstairs to watch TV (mouse potato, couch potato).  ;D
