Fun Afternoon with Pics
« on: September 02, 2006, 08:59:28 PM »
Today Arlan, and my two son’s met at the field for some fun flying. Twin Tutors, a Shark, Ole Yeller, a Ukey, and the TwistStang. My youngest son is into rockets now. A little windy, he had to go two streets over to get one. The wind also played havoc with our planes. Arlan is flying the whole pattern. And his Tutor seems to groove well. Still needs to add some color to the all white plane.
I did not have the nerve to try my triple outsides with either of my planes. Burn a lot of fuel. The Fox on the SkyRay has a new muffler. Still fighting engine runs on it. The new muffler seems to do OK. We found a loose head screw. Arlan suggested I get a gasket kit for it. Keeps going lean after take off.
Here are a few pictures from today. The plan is meet up again Monday afternoon.

Paul, as always, your pics are excellent. thanks, they give me feeling of flying myself when I see them. The Tutor looks good in the air. But the rocket leaving the pad is too cool  8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

I have thought about trying rockets with my nephews, they would dig that.  j1

Well Greg, most of these are Ryan's pictures. I can not see a thing in the display of the camera even with my glasses. Most of my pictures are of empty sky, or I miss the plane on the fly-by's.

Here is a sample of one of my shots. Ryan's shorts.

And yea the rockets are cool. The one in the first post is a ARF and is over 4ft tall.

The one below is a scratch built.

Too cool, what is the main body made from, wrapping paper tube? would that work? I need to stay away from rockets actually, I see the potential to get out of control real fast. No new hobbies, nope, not gonna do it ;D

Here is a tip to save some money on the engines for the rockets. If you have a Michael's craft store near you they stock a decent selection of Estes kits, engines, and related stuff. They also run coupons in the paper every couple Sundays, watch for the 40% or 50% off on 1 item. Then go to the store and hope they have  the "FlightPack" in stock. It is a box of 24 engines, ignitors, wadding and the little plastic plugs that hold the ignitors in. Usually goes for about $50-60, withthe coupon its $25- 35, or about a buck an engine. Sure beats 3 for $6.99.
It has a wide assortment of engines, so you can use a low power one to check the rocket / wind out, then Pump IT UP! if conditions are good.  Don't forget to bring some baby powder to the field, dust the chute before you pack it, and pour a couple teaspoons in the body on top of the chute before you seat the nose cone. This helps the chute open ( no sticking together) and put s a nice white puff when it deploys so you can get a visual on it.   Have fun!

Hey Thanks for the tip. Yep those engines are spendy.

As for the baby powder, we do that. We also cut a few slits in the shoot so it will drop faster and will not hang in the air for miles.

It was a nice break between flights.

Looks like fun.     y1
Up here it's either been to windy or raining on the weekends (raining today).

Were you able to get out today to try the new covering on Old Yeller?

Keep posting the pictures - they are the best part.   x:
