I'm up to my 12th I beam at this point. Three on the list to go.

Ty:

I think it would be fun to see your list....

and how about your comments on how each one built and flew?

Thanks for posting that.  Education for us (somewhat younger....40...) whipper snappers.

I used to think it would be kind of fun to build an I-Beamer.  Then I watched this video ...

Thanks to Bill, Bob and Sparky for providing this incredible video for our education and enjoyment.

Like most modelers I have always greatly enjoyed the beauty of an I-beamer and this unveils so much of their construction mysteries and methods.

Ty:

No comments on the USA - 1?

What I-beamers would you still want to build?

With regard to your comment about ease of building, I think that a lot of Jack Sheeks designs were I-beamers and I recall that he liked that way of building wings because of its ease.

I watched that video at a hobby shop in the LA area. I was shopping there for something and they started the video, i did not leave the shop till the video was done. It was in 1994 and from memory the hobby shop name was Tom and Andy something like that.
The thing is if I wanted to make another model with balsa I wanted to use parts of this particular build.

Here is a update to Bill's I Beam models that most do not know about. In this video Bill shows how the original Ares was built. On anything larger than 35 size models he went to a 3/8" sheet spar with no top or bottom piece on the 1/4" spar. All of my models that I have built that look like I Beam have had the 3/8" spar in them. I had one failure on one of my USA-1's as I used to soft balsa.I did not crash it and was able to repair it. Using the solid spar make the building go much faster.
Here is my Juno from 1988 with the 3/8" spars as per the plans.

The hobby shop was more likely Tony and Addie.  Mother and son. The last pure hobby shop on earth. y1 y1 y1

Yes that is it that hobby store I was talking about. Thanks
She was an awesome builder.

When I was building I beams I used a 2 inch X 1/4 thick Clear white pine capped with 1/8 balsa. I use to hollow the beam out and I could get the weight down to around 1-1.5 ounces. Back in the day, they use to use yardsticks.

I've got one of those old Fruitland Florida kits of the Juno.  I just got to get around to building it someday.  It's one of those where you lift off the box lid and the balsa starts floating up....  oooh-la-la!

Addie passed away several years ago and T&A Hobbies is gone.

Doing one for the Stalker 76 , think at 67 in , as big as I figure Id hold if its howling .
This ( in the picture 57 in. ) has every third rib & nose rib solid , and 1/16 ply for three half ribs in
flat in each tip . Was a swine getting the ribs on the tapered spar , as its 1/4 with 3/8 x 1/8 spruce cap strips .

New one ll be maybe 5/16 spar , with 1/2 x 1/8 top grade spuce cap strips .Tapered width going out ! .

So its NOt an ' I ' , will do vert grained spacer / packers , at the solid ribs . Or 1/16 ply gussets there , Ea 3rd rib .
This gets the rib hole square rather than I , which on a taperd spar dont slide along unhindered .

Tend tagofor 7 mm deep , so lost in sanding flush , youve still gotta quarter . Harder wood'll do too .
Likely use 5/16 - 8 mm on the new Flokerts . The Fuse is layed up , rest to go ,almost onto the tailplane. Spuce LE inner .

All this junk so yo can fly it into Er Um ONTO the ground when the engine cuts, in hurricanes .tho that one theres been into soft ground a few times , worst damadge was a split in the fuse from catching the tailplane between the ankles exiting the shed door / step . >:(
in a farm field vertical , lines loose , from a into wind take off , on the new Sig 015s one night. Unclogged the intake & got a flight .
Never flew in wind on that wire again . 'd thought they would snap & ~^ were sretching a good few inches , like 4 or so , in gusts .

Used 1/4 Sq Spuce spars , Vert Grain ( parrallel /Even depth ) 3/32 web , with occasional ply gussets both sides,
scalloped end ( half an O ) along it . all the ribs just the 1/4 deep .TE & LE spruce too .Covered in silk & tissue ,

You can put the fuse on your knee - and with some force - pull the tips up & down a few inches , no problems . >:D
