Which needle valve/spraybar assembly for OS .46 La?
« on: September 23, 2010, 03:55:43 PM »
Would this one (OS22311000) from Sam's Stuff and Hobbies work well?  It's for an OS, .20 to .40  I got a good one second hand and it has a real nice venturi, but is missing the spray bar and needle valve.  Any help or suggestions will be appreciated. H^^

Hi Glenn,

That is the correct OS NVA.

I used to replace almost all my NVAs with the ST ones, but stopped that once Randy's PA NVAs were released.  Much better than the ST, and cost about the same.

For the LAs I just use the OS, they work fine.

There is really not a ST 46 - 60 NVAS, they are 2 differant NVAs that are differant sizes, Neither works in the other engine without spacers or mods.
The OS would use a ST 46 NVA but the 60 size would be off center a bit

Randy

Glenn,
I am not a expert, but would suggest that you use the OS NVA. Like the others said, you will have to drill out, add spacers for the ST NVA, and once you do that you can never go back. The LA's run fine with the stock NVA. And I have even had a few LA's still running the remote NVA's. I think as long as the remotes have not been abused they work ok for sport flying.
OS have feel that the ST's don't.  I like to feel the "clicks" as you tweek the needle. You don't have that feel with the ST's.

IMHO  H^^

I've been doing really well with Aero Products NVA's.  Randy makes them for all sizes
and shapes of engines.   D>K  Bryan H.

Your objective in choosing the style spray-bar that will give the easiest and best setting is to install one that provides the slowest and most linear gain and that would be an ST style arrangement. There's tons of after market jobs out there, but can speak from experience regarding what Randy sells, that they are amongst the best available.
To size the engine and venturi, it is best to have a numbered drill set at your disposal. Also, it is a good idea if you have an old drill chuck only that fits nicely in your hand but this can be faked with a variety of arrangements including vise-grips.
Start off enlarging the holes with the next size drill bigger than will already pass through the existing diameter as this ensures that the new size is in the same position as the old. Select a size bigger drill and repeat the process until you arrive at the smallest diameter possible (maybe #22 but probably 21 or 20) that the spray-bar will pass through in the assembly that now includes the o-ring. This can be done in one shot with a 5/32 drill although so much material is being removed at the same time that it's easy for the diameter to go off location unless properly fixtured in a real machine tool.
If there's not good compression on the o-ring, visit the o-ring index at your local hardware store and get the right one. If they're all too thick, buy one way smaller than perfect diameter for venturi and let stretching bring it to size for firm compression when assembled.
Now that you have a spray-bar that's about .025 bigger than stock, some additional sizing on the venturi may be in order so I'll just say when doing this, use the largest provided (.281 I believe) and it'll be much better than stock coming out of the gate anyway.

One of the things, probably the main thing, about the entire O.S. LA series is their reliability and consistency in bone stock, out of the box form. In general, these are great engines for most everyone but the hardcore competition flyers. Another bonus, and contrary to some opinions, is that they require practically no break in and are still dead dependable.

IMO, too many people way overthink some of this stuff. Here's the deal, it's an LA-.46. Remember that. If it's the S version to start with, the stock remote will be dependable and work perfectly. If it's an R/C version, or for any reason you want to change out the remote, the standard replacement O.S. C/L venturi mount NVA will also do the same for you. No headaches, no fuss, consistent runs, always.

I mean no disrespect here, just keep it simple and get out and fly. y1
