Title: Fuel Sources
Post by: Joe Hamorski on June 04, 2015, 02:01:20 PM
Just wondering, what are some fuel sources for (nitro/castor % ratio) 5/25, 10/25, 5/22, and 10/22? I live in the Orlando area, and I'm starting to run into issues finding fuel. I'm currently running Fox 35s and OS 40s. I was able to get Powermaster fuel from a great shop, but they are not willing to order for us even if we special order 6-10 cases and pay upfront. I know with this Great Model Aviation community, solutions are available just for the asking. I've called both Sig and Powermaster directly, and Sig is so far the best solution at $23'ish/gal after shipping and Hazard fee.

Do you have any drag racing teams in your area that race.   I know the Garlits museum is down there.   Also check fuel suppliers.

Joe, check with Randy Rich at 713-661-5458 for his pricing on Rich's Brew.  He'll mix any blend you want.

Check with Red Max, they will mix what ever you want. They ship in quarts so no hazmat charges.

Horizon sells Powermaster GMA fuels.  You may be able to order it through your LHS, if you can talk them into it.

I think Sig is probably the best bet for mail ordering fuel. I ordered a few cases last season and the transaction went fine.
I have started making my own fuel again with a sekrit 65 blend for my PA-65.  In my case I order klotz and castor from sig and get the methanol and nitro from Worldwide Fuels.

Like Steve I "roll" my own.  I order Klotz and Castor from SIG, no problem, and buy the methanol and nitro from a local Speed Shop!

Here in the Tucson Desert with the wide variance of temperature year round and the variance in the summer from 65 in the morning to 102 by 10:00 AM it's necessary to use different levels of Nitro to be competitive especially here in Tucson at 2400 ft ASL.  Often approaching 5000 ft density altitude.

Ritch's Brew does the trade show circuit to some extent.  We drive down to Toledo and buy fuel a year at a time.  Maybe if there's a show in Florida you might be able to stock up with Ritch's or another exhibitor.  As the LHS passes away, annual trade shows are the viable replacement.

The special benefit to what Paul is saying is that Randy Rich does not charge for shipping when he is at the trade shows.  Also, if you know where he is going to be, you can call him and tell him your order and he brings it with him.  Randy is a super dude.

Check with John Otto at johnotto@technologyhobbiesinc.com. He is down in FL and mixes fuel for many model boaters. Just tell him what you are looking for and I'm sure he will be happy to mix it for you! Tell him GQ sent you!

Fellow fliers
Thank you for your time and sharing very good solutions to our problem! We are looking several possibilities and will consider ease, availibility, and consistency. For the interim, Sig 5 % Champion is the winner.   y1

If you're a big enough "we", VP Racing Fuel (purveyors of PowerMaster) will sell pallet-loads of fuel to clubs.  If you could stand buying fuel ten cases at a time you'd be set.

Hi Joe,

Grave's Hobby shop is right in your neighborhood and they have all the blends of Powermaster I have needed anytime I've gone there.  Last time I was there, I picked up a case of their 5% Air blend.

Unfortunately, Graves Hobby Shop was the shop I referred to in my opening post! Actually, I was in there today, and bought there last Zinger 11X5 wooden prop(inventory and price was checked and confirmed by their computer), and to my utter amazement, I asked someone if they were going to order more, I was told 'NO!'  n1  Soon they will lose me as a customer. Online and mail order will very soon be the norm for me.
