Double take Flight video.
« on: June 04, 2017, 03:51:13 AM »
Hey so its short and its only Day 2 of flight testing.

Flight reports are encouraging that its all working without any "major" problems.

Hey is it possible that a "Bipe" can actually be competitive?!

At this point it would seem the answer is "Probably"!

You are indeed a true pioneer...  Watch for the arrows!

I would also say from watching the video that this is not a "little girlie" airplane!  You appear to be leaning against the pull in some instances.  Nothing that wouldn't be expected at this point, I guess!

I think the question isnt going to be "Can a bipe be compeitive?" but more will a mono be..

I recall bob hunt saying 15 years ago electric would start to dominate... not many beleived him but he saw its potential. Im going to fall well short of making such bold claims..  but this is indeed NOTHING like anything ive ever flown before....

The engine in these videos was my old comp motor.  It now has a brand new 75 in its nose ready for the comp season. I flew it today in the wind and rain With the new engine for the first time... Simply brutal.

I like arrows.. I dont consider myself a pioneer.... iconoclast possibly.. but I have only learnt what others have turned out.  Without any of the previous top stunt guys knowledge id just be an average non flier.

Randy..  its not "heavy" its 68.5 without fuel but..  what it does have it thundering side force that makes it freightrain steady in level flight.  Im not used to it but it does pull forward with positive tension everywhere.

Brutal to fly....  simply brutal.

No more videos for now..  OZ Nats are in a week... gotta keep something for the judges.

Thanks Lauri .. It needs 2 glowplugs?  U make me special head and port!

In addition to a nice flight.  Nice flying site too.  Is the center of circle concrete?   Not bad.

Corners look pretty good!  Need to see more though.  Does it track consistently?

Have you flown it in any significant wind yet?

I can believe it is brutal to fly very much.  My 74 oz Trivial Putsuit flew very well and did everything right but about 4 flights in a morning in some wind, left me feeling like I'd gone 30 minutes on a Motocross track!

Best of luck PJ!

That is too cool for school, PJ!  It sure as heck isn't any old Bi-Slob.  I look forward to full pattern videos after you're done kicking some mono-plane butt.  I applaud you for your initiative and creativity.  Good grief, it would have taken me a couple of years to produce anything both that different and that good looking.  You built, painted and test flew the thing in the same time it would have taken me to simply "ponder" the concept.  Bravo!

O.K., that's enough apple polishing.

It does look promising. Congratulations on that!

It seemed to me that it is not wanting to turn outsides as small as insides? Will it glide a lap after engine cuts? I don't recall if your contests use the FAI Pattern (where it would matter) or PAMPA/AMA Pattern (where it shouldn't).  H^^ Steve

Ohh yeah it turns the same rate inside outside..  But my handel geometry has needed a change..  which i didnt expect..  Actually there is alot i didnt expect.

Thanks Ted..  I appreciate it.  I went 4 yrs flying the same model.  It was a full project with no loose ends..  no free time and no questions asked.

Glides amazing.  The ground effect is pronounced.

The Weather fifecast up here looks a little demoralising .  >:(http://www.smh.com.au/environment/weather/really-cold-sydney-to-cop-wet-and-windy-burst-of-winter-20170605-gwkek1.html

Tho theyve been way off recently - & ' Winter ' is unpredictable . Didnt stop raining till 3 pm today here . Katoomba .
Tho Katoomba is in its own private cloud  , oftimes in winter . So maybe bring your Ski Gear - or Something Warm .

Hope for the best , should be o.k. part times at least . though I dont think it'll be in the 30's . :(

PJ, great flight!  I can relate to some degree to your Bi plane as I just recently completed my first Bi Plane as well.  Got flight #2 on it today.  Started with the old Flying Fool as a pattern, enlarged it 25%, stretched the top wing an additional rib on each side, added full flaps on the upper wing, with smaller flaps on the lower wing that are mainly actuators for the upper ones via connecting rods.  Also added throttle (old school 3 line stuff here) and a host of other mods.  Finished product has a 45" top wing, around 540 sq in wing total, weighs 50.5oz minus fuel and has a Thunder Tiger 46 RC for power.
It is utterly rock solid stable in level flight.  Todays flight explored takeoff in grass, higher altitude/angles and full throttle.  Discovered its likely over powered, and will have to look into either limiting the throttle some or perhaps a .40 replacing the 46.  Didn't time laps but its clearly faster than my 29oz Shoestring Stunter with a Fox 35. Line pull is at least double as well.  A minor incident on landing gave me some minor damage to fix (left main caught a hole on touch down).
Bi Planes are cool!  Cant wait to get confident with t enough to see how it really handles.  I am thinking it should be pretty snappy.

We flew it to a 4th in open at the Nats.

Got alot of trim issues solved but face 1 more.

Biggest issue at this point seems to be the Biplane is very sensitive to speed changes. So we are converting it to electric and will continue testing improments.
