Bob Hunt meet the "Little Shot"
« on: October 06, 2020, 06:07:04 PM »
In 2010 I built Bob Hunt's Hole Shot and converted it to electric. It flew great but I stink as a control line pilot. I can fly anything that has to do with R/C but put a control line handle in my hand...well you get the picture...crash city. I put my Hole Shot away for a while and recently dug it out. I just started to try the control line "thing" again. Lots of crashing trying to learn inverted flight. I didn't want to risk the Hole Shot again so I scaled down the plans and started building the "Little Shot". At this point in construction the airframe weighs 3.8 oz. The "Little Shot" has a wing span of 33 in with wing area right at 239 sq in. Hopefully she will fly like the Hole Shot. Thanks for a great design Bob to work from!

It looks great. 061 power I hope? 45’ .008 lines. What bellcrank did you install? Set it up so your regular handle deflection gives about 20 deg. elevator deflection and 15 deg. flap.

Setting up a 1/2 A model requires that you keep the controls sedate. In the old days people would use a 4” handle on a 2” bellcrank and swear that 1/2 A models were just inherently “squirrely”. I use a 3” bellcrank and as little as 1.5” handle spacing.

Keep us posted! H^^

Cool plane, Mr.Rob.
Thanks to Mr. Larry...I love my RSM 1/2A Renger handle (I'm on my second one already) and usually run just around two inch line spacing. The larger spacing adjusters stay home...the middle 4 stay with the pitbox so I can fine-tune for feel and control. What would be the heaviest, largest plane I should fly on the small handle?
Ummm, can I expect a similar feel from the larger RSM handle on bigger planes?

Rob,
Very cool ship. One trick that many have used to lean the pattern is to do "visualization" flying of the maneuver you are trying to lean. You start by thinking through the particular maneuver and what control inputs you need to use and where in the course of the flight path they are applied. I also used to think of a bailout I could use if things went south. Once you understand the control inputs work on imagining and talking through inputs as if the ship on the lines and actually use your hand (some do this with a handle in hand). Work on flying the maneuver and following it with your arm/hand as if you were actually flying the ship. Be mindful that you need to complete the whole maneuver so you don't neutralize the control before the pull out to level flight. For inverted I always kept in mind that "down is up, down is up" and if it gets hair give it down to get out. Good luck with the new ship.

Best,    DennisT

I wanted to share some progress. The Little Shot was given a simple covering scheme, an adjustable lead out, and the motor mounted. Current weight is 8.9 oz. I'm hoping for a finished RTF weight of 12-14 oz. It should be a good size for a 0.61 glow.

This weekend is rain and wind so there will be no test flying.

RTF the Little Shot weighs 12.45 oz with an 800-mAh 3S pack. Plenty of run time for me and my skill level. A 1300-mAh pack should work as well.

Since it's electrified, I'd suggest calling it "Little Snot". It would be interesting to scale it up for an 0.61, tho.  LL~ Steve

I built a Blue Pants as a kid. Wish I still had it. Might even learn to fly it.

Cool plane, Mr.Rob.
Thanks to Mr. Larry...I love my RSM 1/2A Renger handle
Ummm, can I expect a similar feel from the larger RSM handle on bigger planes?

I would think up to a .15 would be. OK.

I still have low overhang exponential handles available for big ships. They can handle 100lb. Pull test.

It's electric; how about Little Short, or Small Short?
