Fox .15 Diesel!!!
« on: November 29, 2012, 12:08:24 PM »
Trying to sort stuff (it's been a year long ordeal),
I have come across a FOX .15 Diesel!!!! Is there any point in offering it for sale, or should I just ship it to Brett for the HURL?
Thanks, and have fun!

Rich,

if it's dieselized then it's gotta be the Fox 15BB model and that is not the engine that gets hurled. The Fox 15X is the correct model and the answer is really quite simple.

the Fox 15x weighs just slightly more then 3 ounces the 15BB model is 7.2 ounces approx. That 3 oz difference would be enough to throw out the shoulders of those old guys and even worse they'd really be embarrased at the short range that they would achieve with your engine. My recommendation is to sell it on Fleabay to some deserving modeller.

This motor is not legal for the "World Famous Fox .15 Hurl"
It must be the slant plug version.

Put in on the bay or better yet on RiteAuction.  I just might bid on it.  I love diesels when I can get the ether.   Have to go check and see if the starting fluid cans are in stock yet.  Last time I only got 9 ounces of ether out of a can.

According to Jim Dunkin's reference book on .15 engines, if it's the baffle piston version, only two were made. The conversion was done by Ronald Valentine. If it's the schnurle engine, the conversion was possibly a custom job by Fox.
Either way, probably significantly more valuable than a garden variety Fox.

So, Larry, when you hurl the Fox .15 does it have to have the plug installed & torqued?

Also, the other evening at Warren's Man Cave gathering we needed something to test the spray gun pattern so we just went down the hall in Warren's shop & picked up one of the airplanes sitting there.  We did the spray pattern test on the left wing & decided that the bright purple (similar to the purple on the nose of Uncle Jimby's Systrema) didn't look so great over the yellow Monocote on the PT-19's wing so we put the PT back in the hallway.  You did pick up your PT-19 didn't you?

I remember reading somewhere ages ago about somebody using converted Fox 15's with good success. Might have been something involving R/C combat.

He sells conversions  for a lot of engines.   Depending on hard you run them they last a long time.   Use to have a guy at the radio control field that had a converted .60 diesel that he hand started.   Someone asked him why he didn't use the electric started.  Was told you don't want to bend the parts if you get a hydralic lock.   Diesels guys know what  mean.

Well Rich is going to send it to me I have been looking for one of these for a while to put in a peacemaker . I called Bob Davis a while back and he didn't have any in stock and wasn't sure when he was going to make more. It will be interesting to see how it runs I was thinking about a Marz diesel but without a muffler the exhaust would make a mess.Plus Rich might get to fly it again if he comes back to Jersey for a visit. #^ T.J.

Yes Bill, the plug must be installed.

Brett spent hours putting data together, and noted that the the drag and wieght of the motor, with and without the plug made a noteable difference.
After his analysis, it was determined that the "official Hurl" is to be conducted with the plug installed.

We take this event seriously and spend a lot time and resources to make better each year.

Yep, 18:1 compression, add in a rich fuel mix, a flooded lower crank case, attach a 1/2 horse starter motor with no clutch to the spinner and see what happens!

(Kiss your con rod good bye unless you have incredible feel when pressing the rubber starter cone down.)
