I think the guy who has it now is Doug Martin out of Colorado.
I don't have contact info but I will check.

Check the National Free Flight Society (NFFS) web site. There are Fox FAI 049s that used to be available (equivalent to TeeDee 049) from someone who had put them together from parts. I have three mounted on Nostalgia free flights and they run very well. Totally different motor from the standard Fox 049 of the time.

Doug Martin is your guy

One crank has a round intake cut into it and the other has round one but I don't remember which was for 0 nitro.
-
How do you tell the FAI version from the regular Fox .049?
MM
It is a different engine, different case, larger 3/16" crankshaft trapezoidal exhaust ports
The pictures should help

Nice pics of all the Fox 049s. My FAI 049s all are run on bladder pressure in free flight, and only for a short time. Not sure if it will run at all on suction with the largish venturi. Never tried it. Also need the right tool to keep the cylinder tight, to avoid it unscrewing while it is running.

The bolt on tank fits. The rear covers and thus rear tanks from all Fox .049s, .07s, and Comet-Fox .07s will fir this engine. The engine mounts upright to the tank on Fox tanks. The engine mounts with the cylinder horizontal on the right on all Comet Fox tanks. I hope the pictures show the difference in the tanks.

I tried to get a Fox .049 to run the stunt pattern. Many modifications later, I gave it to someone who wanted it for a collection. Wrecked a really neat model several times! I made a stuffer backplate, Cox head adapter (purchased) and choked the venture. Just not a stunt engine!
-
A major problem with the FAI 049: The backplate threads don't fit real tight. Fuel builds up in them and eventually a blob of fuel is released and it douses the plug element. Galbreath makes a backplate that cures this problem.
-
Yes, the original backplate is a tapered casting. As mentioned I made a "stuffer" backplate to fill the gap, but tha still didn't cure the problem. Great Nostalgia FF engine, worthless for stunt.

To be fair to this excellent little engine, there is a reason it is called the "FAI 049" and not the "Docile Stunt 049." I have nothing but good to say about my three examples, which have been performing well for 15 years since I got them from the assemblers at Muncie in 1998. It is made to go screaming into the sky on the nose of a free flight, and it does that very well for what it is. More reliable than the TeeDee in my experience.

Yep, it's a screamer. Very popular in 1/2A Nostalgia FF events.
