I'd like to find a complete list of competitors in the NATS (by year) since its inception.
Is there such a list?

I will bet that KI. Trostle has that info at his fingertips!

Scroll down to see the names.
These are just the stunt champs. The important Nats champions of the 1970s are those in the combat event.

It looks like it was Bob Gieseke's decade!
It's something to see how different fliers have sorta dominated a time period. Of course, Dave Fitz and Paul Walker have been pretty dominant for 20 plus years! LOL!!

I know this is going to cause a storm of controversy but, having flown both regular and Gieske Noblers, I felt the Gieske Nobler flies much better. I think it pushed the Nobler concept, about as far as it could be successfully driven.

Thanks for the info Guys!
Another question. Were there other catigories of stunt at the time? Example .35-.46 of .51-more....
Can I find out about that?
Also, at the time, was there novice intermediate? If so, how can I find the names of these people?
Thanks a bunch!

Hi Daniel,
AS far as Intermediate, it as never been an official NATS event. Only the age groups (Jr. Sr., Open) and Advanced are Official.

That's not too controversial! I think just about everyone would agree with that. The Nobler was/is a great design but it can certainly be improved upon.

No, it's the Walker Trophy Winner, which most of the time is the same as Open. Seniors have won 3-4 times.

Hi Daniel,
Actually that is a list of the Walker Trophy winners. Te Walker Fly Off pits the J/S/O winners against each other for the overall win. Most all the names are Open members but not all. There have been a few Juniors and Seniors who have won the Walker Trophy. But I think Dennis Adamisin was the last one to win (he was in the Senior class) in 1972. Since then, AFAIK, all the winners have come from the Open Class.

Hi Daniel,
These are the Juniors and Seniors that I know won:
Juniors: Davey Slagle, 1st three NATS, '46-'48
Art Pawloski, 1958
Seniors: Bill Werwage, 1959
Dennis Adamisin, 1972
That 's six total wins, I don't *think* there are others.

The "others" that won the Walker Cup that were not Open fliers are:
Don Ferguson as a Senior in 51
George Aldrich as a Senior in 1952
Hill Hutchins as a Senior in 1954
William Cummings as a Senior in 56
Gerry Cipra as a Junior in 62
For the record, Bob Gieseke won the Walker Cup 5 times - 66, 68, 74, 75, and 79. At the World Champioships, he won in 74 and placed 9th 64, 3rd in 68, 2 in 70 (behind Bill Werwage, the first for an American to win the Worlds), 6th in 72, 3rd in 76, and 5th in 78.

Thanks, Keith. I now remember Jerry Cipra winning, but I didn't know about the others.

I may be mistaken, but I believe the AMA website posts an extensive list of winners in all model airplane categories. I looked at the list some time ago. It went back many years.

Here is the list of 1973 final contestants.
I remember talking to Gene Schaeffer at Flushing Meadows prior to his going to the 1973 Nats. He was very concerned about AL and his plane,(I believe this was the Sea Fury). Wasn't sure he could he stop him. Gene could out-fly anyone, but as we all now know, it seems to take more than that.
-
If Gene doubted that he could win, he probably couldn't.

That's a good point Howard. It kinda contrast Bob "Champione's" attitude in that, he was going to win the Nat's-period!

That is what I tried to teach my son, if you go in thinking you are going to lose, you may as well leave your stuff at home or in the car. H^^
