For the Ringmaster Round up
« on: March 15, 2016, 06:37:37 PM »
There are two contests that I know of near Houston: The Texas Control Line Championships in the spring and the Ringmaster Roundup in the fall. I won't be able to make the spring event due to no airplane, no skill, and a prior commitment. But, I might well be able to get something together for the fall Ringmaster Roundup. Still no skill but at least I can get a plane together.  y1  I've been looking through the posts on this forum about the Ringmaster events and it looks like I'll need an S-1 Ringmaster. They don't seem to be too critical of minor details. Some body mentioned electric power. I've been seriously considering getting into electric powered c/l and this would be good motivation. I purchased a Brodak Electric Clown some time back and I have the power system from that. It looks like that would work out. What do you think? How well would this work? Are electric Ringmasters acceptable at the RR?

You'd need to check with the Ringmaster Roundup organizers to see what's open to the S-1, what's open to other Ringmaster variants, and whether an electric Ringmaster will be accepted.

The S-1 is the only Matt-Kania designed Ringmaster that's eligible for Old Time, and it's the one to build if you want to be a purist.  It's an easy build from plans, and if you don't want to build from plans you can check with Pat King in the Vendor's Corner to see if he has any kits.  (Other people may sell kits, too - I know that Pat Johnson in Idaho has a modern Ringmaster variant, but I don't know if he sells an S-1 kit).

The stuff from an Electric Clown ought to work -- I just looked and a Clown is a bit smaller than a Ringmaster, but not by much.  If Brodak was generous in sizing the stuff it should work.

The Ringmaster's a fun plane.  I should build another one.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

The electrics are welcome. I didn't have an electric when i went, but they were welcomed. The OTS legal ringmaster is required to fly the OTS and classic pattern. Only the S1 can be flown in the pattern events, and all variants are welcome in the "fun" events. That included "fast/ slow" and pilots choice awards. There is ringmaster team pursuit, which is a great way to get into and experience combat, without the fear of losing a plane.
All levels of competition were represented in the pattern flights.

It was my first contest for stunt, and it was extremely fun. Then i missed last year, so i need to try and go again this year

Go to the brotherhoodofthering.info site they have all the answers.
I may be wrong but I doubt it.

I myself don't think they would stop you from entering and flying, unless you beat Joe Gilbert.   LL~ LL~

I did challenge him in 2014. I basically wrote a check my @$$ can't cash, but the worst part was i couldn't go last year to beat him.... I mean fly with him  >:D lol

No worry on going to the ringmaster roundup. If you don't have a ringmaster they will loan you one.

Charles ,

Eric Rule at RSM has a really nice package he has developed for the Electric Ringmaster.  You can get a kit from him and the complete electric package which is pre wired and pre programmed.  All you have  to do is attach it to the airplane, charge the battery and go fly.  He is at VSC this week but you can probably reach him next week when he gets home.
