While attending the Spring Tune-up event at Delta Park in Portland Oregon I again witnessed what can only be described as the epitome of what this great sport is all about. A seasoned competitor sold a complete plane for a meager amount to a beginning competitor. While in and of itself you might say, so what? I was standing within earshot and heard one of his friends ask the gentleman who sold the plane, How come so cheap? The engine alone would have brought twice that on Ebay? The reply; He needed it and besides, my wall was full. Unable to keep quiet, I stepped forward and complimented him for his act of kindness. His reply is all to familiar: Thank you but I don't need any thanks, he will fly his heart out with that plane and that will be thanks enough.
If I ever had any doubts about the character of the guys who pursue this fun in the sun sport, they are gone. To each of you, starting with the founder of this great forum, Thank you for making all of this possible. It's only a great hobby because each of you give so much back to it.

Marv,
I hit the applaud button on your post.
The whole airplane cheap is a glowing example of the generosity you find at the circle.
I can't imagine how many glow plugs, props, dollops of glue and tanks of fuel have been passed back and forth over the years. Or how many houre have been devoted to getting someone elses equipment to work. But we are all guilty of being selfless at one time or another.
Thanks for reminding me.

Frank, Paul
I was not sure just how much I would enjoy this time in my life, what with being a retread and all. The challenge for me is to measure up to you guys. I don't have much since I'm a newbie and my vast storage of know how would fit in the head of a pin and still have room for the Lord's prayer, but I have made the commitment to myself that helping others when I can will be the watch word I will live by. Perhaps I will be fortunate enough to meet you guys at some point and the highlight of my day will be to look you in the eye, shake your hand and watch you put one up j1

Hi Marv,
Good post. I am working on getting Paul out to fly with us this summer so you might just get a chance to shake his hand and fly with him.
The Spring Tune Up was great and the people attending made it that way.
It was good to see you there.

Marv, yup a good post, so I hit your karma too. I also hit Franks, cause I was the recipiant of such generosity from him last season. He parted with his Oriental, and it now hangs from the cieling in my workshop/basement. I have yet to fly it, but it will se much time in the air in the coming weeks. y1
So thanks again Frank, and to all you mentors out there, THANKS HEAPS :) you guys help make this hobby fun as hell y1

Marv,
Wish I could have been there. Hope to see you at the NW Regionals. I think you have to do what you can to keep this event alive. Very cool story.

AWWW shucks fellers..........yer makin out like we got saints in control line. I think what really happens is when we get out to the circle we get so wrapped up in getting airplanes to fly that glow plugs and cheap planes are a small (heck not even noticeable) price to pay.
Greg-it was nice to see you every month out there getting better and better and it didn't cost John or me or any of the guys a thing to answer questions and give you tips. And it was cool watching you get better. j1 y1 ~> j1 y1

Things like this is what makes this hobby so much fun. I have watched people give engines, parts, plugs, props and you name it in the form of friendship. One person almost took an engine back because the recipient kept wanting to know the price. I myself have been on the receiving end and will try my best to always keep giving/helping. WOW I was there and didn't know
ONE thing. Don McClave..(most)every year after the fall follies in Salem. HE gives his plane away to a very deserving flier. He's one of the good guy's of control line.

The whole business is just due to good people.
I have benefitted from so many people when it came to flying these thiings that I am way more than happy to do what little bit I can to help anyone out.

Back in the old days. I had a kit stilleto with an Enya .35 glued right into it. I couldn't fathom how to make a cowl.
One day I was out at the Rouge Park circle in Detroit and Rollie and Bob McDonald were there. I met them for the first time that day. Bob told me that he'd help me build a real stunter but I'd have to buy all the stuff for it. Over the course of the next 5 or 6 years the Mcdonald's gave me the best gift I'd ever recieve. And that was the desire to do things right.
All my life I'd only made half hearted attempts at building and flying or anything for that matter. Well they took me in and changed my life. And I'm that much the better for it. They tought me to try to do my best in building a stunter and those lessons permeated everything I did from then on.
Thanks Bob.
