Title: Foam Wing Cutters
Post by: Bill Little on December 11, 2010, 07:16:25 PM
I know of Bob Hunt and Crist R. who commercially supply Foam Wing Cores for us.  Both have great products.  I know that Randy Smith and Tom Dixon sell foam cores, but I don't know if they cut them.

For research purposes, who else do you KNOW that sells foam cores and actually cuts them, themselves?

Thanks for your troubles.

I think a guy by the name of Bob Furr cuts them. Might be here.

So, Bob Hunt, and possibly Bob Furr, as the only know sources of people who actually sell their own foam wings cores?

Dude, it is a small market place! LL~

(nothing against Bob Hunt's magnificent work!,  Just trying to develop a data base of suppliers, if there are any others!)

Bill,

There was a guy in the Cobb County Sky Rebels (Tom Dixons club) Who used to cut wings. And yes Randy used to cut his own wings, don't know if he still does...

Windy U shared some space on his website with (?) Duncan, who cut nice cores after the guy before gave it up. I have one of them. I know "Dunk" took a break, but I'm not sure if he came back at it or not. Might check with Windy.

The guy that cut cores for Dixon was Jim Pearson, who took on the Ukey 35 and Ukey 40 after Joe Just stopped making them. I seem to think that maybe he quit doing both cores and the Ukey's. Check with Dixon, ya know.

Da Dirt has some R/C cutter in California cut his cores for him, but I don't know who that is. A search might turn up the name. Try "Dan Dirt foam cores" or something like that...  H^^ Steve

Bob Mellen, http://www.flyingfoam.com/ , cut Dan's.  He's been cutting foam wings for 40 years.

You could do it yourself.  It's easier than it looks.

Hi Howard,

Thanks.  I did help a friend back in the early '70s cut foam cores.

I am just collecting info since I've been asked a few times about everyone who cuts foam cores.  I don't know but a couple who do.

Phil Cartier also cuts custom cores, I left him out of the original post, by accident.

I don't want this to sound like a commercial, but I'm in the business of cutting foam wing cores, making fully sheeted foam wings, making Lost-Foam building fixtures and making fully-built wings in the Lost-Foam process. I offer many other modeling services and can do virtually any custom jobs in modeling. I've been in the business since 1969 and have cut wings for dozens of championship fliers, including six World Champions and at least a dozen National Champions. If you need something cut, please give me the opportunity to quote you a price. I'm confident I can handle your needs.

Bob Hunt

As you all know, word of mouth is the very best advertisement.

I am very much a stickler for detail and workmanship and I can assure anybody who has not seen Mr. Hunts work, that it is most definitely, as good as it gets.

As good as I think I am, I'm still blown away by Bobs work.
Give him a call and see what he can do for you.

Give Jim Pearson of Model Wings a call. He and Tom Dixon are probably connected in this some how...........not sure. Jim has always cut me excellent wings. He will sheet them and install wing gear boxes if you like. Also Carl Bumgarner in southern Missouri has cut me some excellent wings as well. He reads this forum.

HI Bob,

As you may have noticed, I put your name first on the list.  You know I always call you for my needs. ;D

To any others that may read this:

I think my "request" wasn't worded correctly.  I am not wanting a foam wing cut "for myself" at this time, I am just trying to find out all that do it commercially.

I spoke to AMA in Muncie, the plans service cuts foam wings, but only for the planes they sell plans for. Also, www.compufoamcore.com cuts foam cores, looks like you have to provide the plans. Maybe that will help.  :!

Thanks, John.  It seems there are a couple guys/companies out there that do cut foam wings.

AS I said, I am not looking for the service for myself.  I have been asked about the number of people, so to speak, that do cut wings.

Merry Christmas!
