Mike Haverly invited me to stooge for him today. Nice to get out. I can't fly for another week, but I could hold onto his plane pretty well. Below is a picture taken out at Tacoma Narrows airport where we fly and of Mike's new Shrike. It's clearly going to be a good one. Power is an PA 40 on pipe and it clearly has plenty of juice.

Gorgeous plane and glad to hear you can get out and be a stooge. One of our locals, if you can call Joplin Mo a local, is recouperating from some heart surgery. I may be out of line on this as I am surprised no one posted it. the gentleman is Ken Nash. His wife Elaine has been keeping people posted on his improvement. They are one great couple in the modeling world. Take care, DOC Holliday

You lucky dog Randy; I met Mike at VSC and he is one really nice guy to be around. He is also a great builder finisher of models. Hope you get back to normal soon, but meanwhile keep posting your usual good info and pictures of your planes. Tell Mike Jim Kraft said hi, and his new plane is beautiful.

AWESOME RANDY...MIKE! TOO COOOOOOOOOOOOL! SIMPLY BEEUUUTTEEEEFUL! H^^

Jim, No, don't wish Randy back to normal, we love him better when he's not normal! As far as good health, YES, heal fast Randy, but please don't ever get to normal! LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~
Your abnormal twin,
Will
By the way, GORGEOUS AIRPLANE Mike!!! #^ #^ #^ #^

Will,
Uh, thanks. I think. 8)

There’s a Northwest guy named Mike
He built a super-cool plane named Shrike
It’s yellow, blue, purple and black
Good grief, I just had a Stunt Attack!
Just a little dose of JCT!
OK Mike, so the poker face at the NW Regionals was just to suck us in so you could show your Hole Card.
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!! y1 y1
Every year I can’t wait to see what jumps out of those dingy workshops. And every year it just gets better! Seems like the year of the yellow bird! CONGRATULATIONS! Hope to see it at the West Coast Nationals---oops- Golden State Championships in Oct.

Thanks for all the nice words. Randy was nice enough not to mention the fact this was a test of his recent surgery, that is holding onto and launching my airplane. I'll not go into weight problems or actual numbers but suffice to say it is, uh, portly. Thankfully the PA 40 in the nose hauls it better than I could have expected. It's still a ways from being contest ready but coming along nicely.
Just for info, the yellow is Randolph, colors are all Auto Air Colors and Omni two-part automotive clear coat. Covering is Poly-span. I'm flying on 66 foot .018 lines about 5.2 second lap times.
This was going to be my Nats plane but some unplanned family issues preclude my first trip to Muncie. I do hope to make it to Clovis though.

Mike,
It's not like it weighs a ton or anything. It's a little on the high side, but well within the capabilities of the wing to lift and the engine to pull. And it really looks sharp in the air.
I hope to make it to Golden State this year. May actually happen. ;D
By the way, saw the doc today for follow up. No flying for another week at least. <grumble, grumble, grumble....>
So I'll include another shot of the Shrike.
-
I like it mike,, pretty sharp!
will you be in Mcminnville this year? hope you have her trimmed by then, would like to see it fly. I was down there this weekend with Scott doing some remedial training, love flying there.

Great looking airplane. Mike you always do great work.
Have you decided to repair the Sheeks airplane for VSC?

Thanks for posting the info about Ken. I should have got it done, myself.

Mike,
Beautiful plane. You did good on this one. Wish I had a yellow plane. ::)

Gordan,
You do have a yellow plane.
I should note that Mike has really come along. The Shirke is impressive in the air.
-
What are the span and area on the Shrike wing ??
-
Yellow is my favorite color for a plane. Unfortunately, it seems to take a zillion coats of yellow to cover any undercoat, but I've only done one yellow plane with undercoat of sort of a neutral grey. As I remember, it took nearly a quart of yellow! OUCH!!
Being sort of weight-concious, I now have to settle for some shades of red or maroon--covers in 2 light coats.

C 'mon Phil, you know you love it here, rain, moss, rain, humidity, mildew and of course rain. Today it is 80 and no clouds or fires in sight ;D
Gordon, you know I fly with Pete, he had a whole gallon of yellow paint! No surprises here except that it was unopened. Pete never met a yellow plane he didn't like :)
This is a Randy Smith design about 56. in and 640 sq. in. I used Randy's plans, lazer cut ribs and cf landing gear. This is (IMO) a perfect size for a .40 though the power of this PA is really impressive. Base coat is white and it took 8 oz. of unthinned dope for coverage. Of course after thinning that same 8 oz. was nearly 1 quart. The trick is an unblemished base.

Looks great Mike. You did yourself proud buddy.
Yellow seems to be the in color this year. I can say this from flying mine, it sure stands out agianst the back ground. No getting lost in the clutter with a yellow airplane.
Pete's down to only one gallon of yellow? we'll have to send him a care package if he's having problems getting enough paint... S?P %^@
Are you planing on a new Sheeks design, or a rebuild for VSC?
I hope to see you at the Golden State this year. Drag along Randy and Pete if you can.

Nice Mike. You have come a long way since the FRancy Pants. H^^ H^^ H^^

John,
I believe that Mike, psychotic as it may be, is actually planning to build another Freedom 45 for VSC. Not rebuild the old one, but build another one. But hey, I built two Eleanors, uh, Shoestrings that is.
-
Well, that's true. I actually just returned from the shop and have a new rib set nearly complete.

Hummm...mellow yeller' actually has to be sprayed like any transparent finish with a solid unblemished light color (prefer white) UNDERCOAT.
From there...shouldn't pose any problem....(that is..except for repairing pavement rash later on down the road. H^^
At Boeing...we often used YELLOW (over base coat primers) for video recording wind tunnel models against those dark backgrounds.
Remember nuttin shows up better in flight that yellow (even Dandydoo-lions' in the grass know that? JUST NATURE...that flowers often are yeller' to attract bees..LL~
With all this drivil...GREAT CHOICE OF COLOR...
MIKE!! SIMPLY BEEE UUUTEEFUL...
