FLYING WINGS IN CLASSIC STUNT

What is your feeling about adding a landing gear to a flying wing from the classic years.Reactor,Half Fast, Darwing and many others.Would this bother you if someone entered one with this modification.It would not improve the flying ability of the plane it would just be a way of getting the thing off the ground.No tricycle gears just something mounted behind the motor.It has been said almost anything could be entered but I was wondering how you all felt.Don't hold back if you feel it's a abomination and the worst thing that ever hapened to classic tell me.Last year I tried a Sassy Saucer but gave up on it. I will bring it to Brodak so everyone can try and fly it.

Certainly legal enough.  y1  There are several Classic Stunt flying wings, tho, that were designed to fly Stunt with. Why not build one of those? The Red Reinhardt "Stunt Wing" (?) from '55 would be a good choice, not hard to build, etc.  j1  Steve

If they are doing fidelity points it ought to cost you one or two, probably no more.  I've seen a Red Reinhardt wing fly and it flew very well.  There is also the Fierce Arrow, Fierce Arrow 400, and, the Mackey Monster, all classic legal and with landing gear.

I got my Tom Morris classic legal book out.  There is a neat 1/2A, Draggin', MAN 5608; There is a Reaction, basically a Reactor with a single wheel gear, Aeromodeller Annual 1956.  It is smaller, @ 30 in wingspan.

Adding a landing gear is specifically allowed, with certain restrictions in PAMPA OTS.  but nothing about it in the Classic rules, I think.

I bolted a landing gear to the front of a T-Square in the 60's so I could fly off dirt with a stooge.  Worked pretty darn good.  $5.95 McCoy RedHead for power.

Now the question is: "Do you build to win or build because you like the design"?  I have competed with the Stuntwing after I got it tamed down.  Nothing like having guys that were there that seen the original being flown.  Larry Scarinzi told me at VSC when mine was there that they watched Red fly his the first time.  He was being congradualated on a terrific flight when he replied, "Yes it would be once I get control of it".  I was the same way on the first flight of mine.  There are more than several of us that build designs because of the hero factor or it is an unusual design.  I got an award at VSC a couple of years ago with the Bil Netzband design called the "Gold Brick".    So build it and fly it.  Most of all have fun doing it.  DOC Holliday

I once encouraged, indeed helped, Mel Lyne to fly a 60s-era Combat plane in Classic Stunt. It was actually a Brit design--possibly a Warlord--Mel had been using in a local Combat event, D-Bat, where they are required to use old designs powered by 2.5cc diesels.

Anyway, we wired some gear on it, there was no issue at all.

Well, except for poor flying abilities on the part of the model, some variations in run length.

Not directed to the originator of this thread, but can people please, please simply begin reading the actual rules...?!?!

As often happens, most people do not read the question , so you really haven't gotten a response on HOW PEOPLE FEEL ABOUT DOING THIS.   I know the question was NOT ABOUT THE RULES, OR THE LEAGALITY OF DOING IT.   j1

You want to know how this concept will be accepted when you show up with a Super Satan with a landing gear, right?  (well at lweast a similar plane, VooDoo maybe??  ;D)

I think it is a great idea, and would not offer any protest, actually I would love to see it!

I flew a lot of Reactors and Darwings in the 50's and many other wings.The big wing Reactor soon went out of style as it was to big to compete with the Wooten designs.I have plans for the Reactor and the Reaction.I have several very good classic planes but I get bored flying them.I may build a Reactor or a Darwing with a gears and use it for classic.They do not turn super tight as later combat models did so they should do well at looking smooth in the stunt pattern.About 15 years ago I built a NObody and entered a combat contest at Jacksonville. I won second with it because it could not be destroyed no mater how many times I hit the ground with it.I didn't enter any more contests as I could see I was long past my prime and it was a fluke that I got 2nd.I flew this plane for about 5 years as a sport plane and kept thinking this would be a pretty good stunt plane. Most flying wings don't seem to land or glide well.When I built the Sassy Causer last year I found out I could get it to land OK about like a Ringmaster. If I build a wing it will be a one week project with plastic film covering.Come to think of it I use to put Reactors together over a week end and those had doped silk finishes.

Ed, this reminds me of the what people call the good ole days.  Remember building and finishing combat wings in just a couple of days.  Six coiats of dope over silk and go fly.  Most times dope has not even cured.  Wish I had my Reactor back.  It was a show stopper with Golden Fox 40 in the nose.  DOC Holliday

Doc it's funny the more I look at this picture the more I see. Notice the wing in front of the Reactor has the motor mt's broken off and the wing tip is broken and I am holding the motor. Also I can see Testers fuel can in the tool box and a tall 1.5 vold dry cell next to it. Here is the complete picture with Tom Z and his 1956 Nobler.Toms Nobler was a early prerelease kit from Topflight. The local hobby shop "Kirns Hobbies"in Binghamton NY was one of the larges Topflight dealers in the country. Kirn was a partner of Polk in NYC. I worked there on and off for ten Years part time.
