Title: Flying near Richmond, CA?
Post by: Tim Wescott on June 16, 2012, 09:20:23 AM
It's looking quite likely that I'm going to be working in Richmond, California for a few months starting in August.

Are there any good CL flying sites/clubs in the area?

Hi Tim:

Closest is the Alameda Aero-Nuts, my club, that flys at a dedicated CL-only model field run by the City of Alameda. Paved circle, grass infield. You can spot the field by doing a Google Earth view of Alameda and the intersection of Doolittle Drive and Harbor Bay Parkway. About 15 miles from Richmond. Next is the multi-use CL and RC field at Davis, CA about an hour up I-80 towards Sacramento,  hosted by the Woodland-Davis Aeromodelers. This is the site of most contests in the NorCal area. Third is the Napa CL circle, where Dave Fitzgerald practices, a beautiful all-paved site that hosts speed contests as well as stunt. About 45 minutes from Richmond. Lots of good CL to be had in the San Francisco Bay Area. I am sure you could get a loaner model from any of a number of the locals. Send me a PM for more info.

It looks like a nice little spot to fly.  I'm planning on driving down, so assuming I don't crash all my flying stock I'll bring planes (and besides -- I crash too much to feel comfortable flying a borrowed plane for any length of time).  I'm hoping that I can find a housing arrangement that'll accommodate a modest electronics shop so I can continue to serve my existing customers.  I'm not sure if that's realistic or not, but if I can do that, I can do simple airplane repairs, too.

What's the likelihood of flying happening on the 11th or 12th?  My "move to CA and slave away for half a year" has turned into "live in a hotel for half a month (thank God) and do intensive consulting with our staff", but if I can get away on Saturday or Sunday I'd like to drop by and visit.

Pretty good chance at the Woodland/Davis site. Also there is flying in Concord...pretty close... on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month. Details at "AeroManiacs(dot)com". Let me know if you want to fly in Davis - I'll round up the usual suspects and make sure the field is in good shape.  8)

The Ted Goyet meet is the weekend of the 25/26th, if you are still here then. You can fly the Skyray.

Here is the latest page on N. Cal CL flying sites.  2 contest this month, 19th is the Musciano hollow log 1/2a contest in Alameda and 25th, 26th is the Ted Goyet in Davis.

I lived in Richmond for many years and I was a member of the Alameda Aeronuts when Bill Osborne was still alive.  I moved back to my home town, Sacramento and now I fly at the Davis sites.  Unlike the Alameda site which always has activities every weekend from 7am - noon, there is only a hand full of us control-liner at the Davis site, so you need to email myself or Pete Cunha to see if anyone is going to practice.

Note, the Alameda site is about a 25-30 minute drive from Richmond, CA. on a Sunday morning with no traffice.  Maybe Mike as do it in 15 because he is doing 85mph.  During week days rush hour it can be a 1 hour drive.

Mike lives in Alameda, I'd say 15min. if the stop light is red.  I live in San Leandro and it takes me 20 min. to go home and get another plane #!!! #^ #^ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~

Mike actually lives about a half mile from the Alameda field and could WALK there in less than 15 minutes. This is certainly the nearest to Richmond and there is always flying Sat and Sun mornings, and often Wed mornings when the retired guys tend to come out. Sunday is busiest, and I only got in 5 flights today due to the crush of 2 or 3 other flyers. The prettiest site in the region is Napa, but not sure it is always open. My invite to provide a Vector is still open if you don't bring your own.

Last time I did that turned into three years part time.  The gig was on the way to our flying field from my house, so it worked out.

The second to last thing I did with a Sig Skyray was 90 degrees worth of pull-out on the last corner of a triangle.

(The last thing was to rebuild it).

Hopefully I'll be happy and home come the 25th.  But should that not happen -- maybe I'll take you up.

And thanks.

Dang but I've been busy.  So, I'm thinking I'll just schlepp on down to Alameda 'cause I'm lazy and it's close.  Hopefully I'll see someone there.

Usually, there is always activity before the wind kicks in which is about 1pm.  Look for Larry Wong and Howard Yamagata on Sunday.   If you have a 1/2a Scientific model you can enter the Musciano contest or just borrow a model.  I probably will not come because I live in Sacramento.  The Woodland/Davis club usually practice Sunday morning.
Note - even those there is a contest on Sunday, there is still open flying on the large circle.  They will only use the 1/2a circle for the Musciano event.

Turns out that I will be in Greenbrea, Cal for three weeks in early October for our daughters wedding. What a coincidence and it looks to me as if the Bill Osborne field in Alameda is my best bet for C/L action while visiting. Any idea what time frames are good to visit the field?
Thanks
Wayne

Usually Sat and Sun mornings.  Sometime Wednesday for all of the retired members.

You gotta go to the Golden State contest.  Reschedule the wedding if necessary.
