Hi Guys, I wonder if anyone has a copy of FM magazine that had My Dad's Model of the B58 Hustler that wad featured in the barnstorming section of the periodical. It was the  centerfold of the model my Dad built of a B58 Hustler taken at Flushing Meadow Park. That model did fly and as my dad never got over the dizziness of CL I did the honors of flying the model. You cannot imagine the thrill that my Dad displayed when he saw something he created from scratch actually take to the air and make the laps. My Dad has been gone now for many years and I would really appreciate if anyone could nail down the issue this model appeared in. Perhaps I can purchase the issue from someone who has it or order a back issue if possible. It would mean a world to me. If no other recourse is possible if someone could scan the pages from the Mag in I would be indebted. Thank You all.

Can you narrow down the date?  At least get it into one single year. And are you sure it was Flying Models. Single issues com up on evilBay all the time and if the correct issue could be determined it makes the search easier and quicker.

I remember seeing the controline B-58 Hustler in a modeling magazine but I don`t remember what magazine.  It seemed to have a Veco Needle nose spinner and the engine was inverted.

Flying Models, February 1974, page 41.  Same issue as Bob Hunt's original Genesis article.  Took me about an hour pouring through my not very well organized collection.  I won't part with my copy but I'll scan it later tonight.

I didn't have any spare time tonight to search, but Gary's work makes it easier! I'll see if I have any extra copies. I collect and swap out magazines and have had untold numbers of extras over the years. I'll check and get back to you here.

Sorry to report, Peter, that I do not have a spare copy of that magazine. In a way, I hate doing that research, because I can't do it quickly and efficiently. I keep getting distracted by head lines on the covers and have to spend some time flipping through all the others! The next thing you know several hours have flown by! That issue has Bob Hunt on the cover with his Genesis. Keep an eye on evilBay f or that one. It is a popular issue because of it's content. If I happen to run across a copy, I'll be sure and snatch it up for you.

                      Hello Peter
When I first saw the B-58 model your dad had made I thought it was awesome, He had to design, scratchbuild, paint  and make sure he had the correct CG for the plane to fly. I remember that the ground where the plane was standing was wet like it had been raining. Your dad did a great job. The B-58 Hustler is a favorite of mine. There is a video in you tube that shows the plane on a low fly by in front of a crowd at a military airshow. The plane flys after the B-52 and the narrator would say " the Mach busting B-58 Hustler"  as it went by it made a lot of noise and the crowd was impressed. I have watched that section  many times. good luck in your search for a copy. A link to the video in you tube      the B-58 appears at the one minute ten second mark.

Hi Guys, Well the old issue of Flying Models arrived all the way from England. And here is a snap shot of the page with the B58 that my Dad built. It says that I did it but that maybe because I made the submission to FM back then (I did the monokote finish on it though).

Anyway the Description says that there is another photo of the model on Page 5 of the October 1972 FM issue. Can someone possibly scan that page and post it to this thread. I have no clue what context that photo is in. Thank You.

The Fox 59 in the nose was a later change. Initially a much smaller engine was mounted in on of the outboard engine pods pointed out at a 30 degree angle. Well that did not work out so the nose was modified to host the Fox 59. All I know is that it really had to get going to get airborne but it did fly rather well in level flight. But when the engine quit I had to land it while it was still moving at a good clip. Landed like the real thing though with a nose up and tail down attitude.

Glad you got what you wanted.  With that much weight and power did it pull hard? D>K

Now that's an airshow to end all airshows:  F-100, 01, 02, 04, 05 & 06, B-47, B-52, B-58, KC-135 and C-130.  And real live-fire rockets & bombs.  You won't see a show like this again.
In my USAF career I saw all but the B-47 & B-58, which were grounded by then.  Barring a well-financed miracle, nobody will see them fly again.

With the air speed that it needed to lift off and like you said the weight and the Engine, It was a two handed exercise. The model was in the back of my car while the car was stolen. The car was recovered but the radio, speakers and of course the model was gone.

We put the airplane in a puddle so you could see the underside of the model in the reflection. Made for a more interesting photo.

Hi Guys, Alan scanned the Oct 1972 page of FM which had a photo of the B58 in it's initial configuration. It was never able to fly using this mode. I cannot remember which engine was mounted in the engine pod. I remember arguing with my Dad that he should of put the engine in the nose. He countered with "If we put the engine in the nose it will ruin the outline of the plane. I did agree to this but ultimately what got the model in the air was putting a Big motor in the nose and the Veco Needle nose spinner helped maintain the outline of the model.

If you read the letter under the photo someone asks about plans for a 727 jet. Funny coincidence is that my dad built a CL version of a 727 this one flew quite well and had throttle control with a RC OS20. I have a photo of that one somewhere that I will post.
