Flying line Clip question

I bought some flying line clips at Topeka and they have one end that the eye is bigger and pretty much round. (If that makes sense) Are there any draw backs or problems with this type of clip? Even on a 60 size plane? They have the Slider in the middle to open.

WARRING…. These line clips are good for Fishing and /or flying planes that weigh 30 oz. Or less. The clips are BRASS and are week. HOWEVER, I use them for my .15 sized planes and my U-key to teach kids. WHY I use them. I let the kids put on the lines to the plane and the larger clip helps with the frustrations with the scissor clip. These are not for competition flying.

The big round end is for attaching the sinker. A good yank will open one. I have a couple that are made from steel wire but I can't find anything but brass now. There are some very strong steel clips at Cabellas. Called "Duolock snap". I use size 5 and 6. 72 in a package for about $7.00. p/n is duosnp-bk-6 or 5. Even the McMahon snaps are brass.

LENOX Made a great steel clip with a slide. NOW there brass also. Guess I'll make my own again.

I found some at Mike's Hobby shop in Dallas a few years ago. They were not brass. They look just like the normal line clips but one end has the bigger loop. I have been using them with no problems. I got them to prevent binding like the smaller ones do at times.

The ones I have are chrome, is that an indicator that they are not brass? But, none the less, Thanks for the info. I'm so glad I ask,I won't be using them on my 40+ Size airplanes.

Test it with a magnet, Terry. If there's no attraction, it's brass.

This is a copy of a post that I made on the brotherhoodofthering.info forum, 1-28-09.

Back in April I did some testing of these types of clips with some interesting results.

I then contacted the manufacturer, Eagleclaw, and asked what the "Load Rating" was on their "Duo-lock Snaps."

I received a reply from Mr. Steve Schreck of Eagleclaw and he provided the following:

Dear Mr. Arnold,
I have asked our QC Department to look into this matter and they have come back with some data.
They tested various Duo-lock snaps from our inventory.

Size 1 averaged 18lbs.
Size 2 averaged 30lbs.
Size 3 averaged 40lbs.
Size 4 averaged 49lbs.
Size 6 averaged 60lbs.

In some instances where the snap fell below what is normal we did notice a slight variation in the way the large end of the snap attached. I will be working with the vendor to tighten this up.

I would recommend that we use a 5/3 derating on these which is typical for safety applications.

That would make the working ratings:
Size 1 10 lbs.
Size 2 18 lbs.
Size 3 24 lbs.
Size 4 29 lbs.
Size 6 36 lbs.

In the second picture that Larry posted the Snap next to the penny is closed on both ends and the one next to it is open on both ends. You must close the small end first then the big end can be closed. Make up a set of lines and install the Duo-lock clip small end on the line and then you will only have to open the large end to connect your lines. No lost clips.

I got a bunch of the slider type clips about an inch long off ebaY, cheap. They are about an inch long and I would use them on 1/2A to 15 size airplanes, if I ever get around to it.  I gave one each to three different friends and asked them to test to destruction.  Results were 35, 40 and 40 lbs pull.
