PT-19 Tail Wheel Assembly, Thanks Igor
« on: May 31, 2013, 08:29:05 PM »
Among the many awesome details of Igor Pachenko's plane, was the scale like forked tail wheel unit.
He was kind enough to show me the photo album, of the entire build of his plane. There were several photos of how he fabricated the tail wheel fork.
As soon as I got home, I cut the tail wheel off of my PT-19 and made up one like his.
Check it out

OK, I'll bite.  How did he make it?

OK, I'll bite.  How did he make it?

Just a block of aluminum, roughly shaped with a band saw. Then final shaped with a file.
The top of the fork has a boss that fits into the aluminum sleeve. The landing gear wire passes through the sleeve and into a hole drilled into the boss at the top of the fork. The whole assembly is then bonded together with J B Weld. I added a couple of rings cut from a brass tube.

His looked better than mine.

Let's see a picture of yours.

That's a lot of work for a tail wheel! How much did yours weigh?

That is a picture of mine.
I didn't think to weigh it before I put in on.

After the cockpit detail, it didn't seem like a lot of work at all.

My tailwheel strut sophistication is commensurate with my cockpit detail.

Im friends with Yves Fernadez ,some of the custom made components in his planes just make me feel inferior as a builder.

Some build for function with minimal weight penality
Some take the opportunity to build a tail wheel and construct it as beautful as can be crafted.

Me thinks of a certain Ted Fancher and his cowls that fall into the latter..........

Is it wrong to take pride in your work ?

I follow Yves pictures on FB and his work is incredible. According to Larry, Igor's work is just as nice. I would like to see it in person.
