Flying at Buder
« on: April 11, 2010, 08:24:21 PM »
We got our first flights of the year at Buder.  We also got to see the eagles flying (we saw Louis, he'll be flying at the Cardianls home opener this week).  We also got a spectator up with the trainer.

The wing has been glued back together before, and the best part is it's the brother-in-laws LL~ LL~.

Watching the handlers train the eagles was awesome, beautiful bird

The next day was better. Winds were light and pretty steady direction. The guys from the Raptor Rescue were back with the Bald Eagles also, and I got to see them fly. They were at the St. Louis Cardinals home opener tonight flying one of the Eagles. If you hang around Buder Park enough in the winter time, you can see one or two flying near the river. If it's cold enough up north, they follow the Mississippi down stream looking for easy fishing, and sometimes work their way up the Meramac River. The first time I ever saw a Bald Eagle in flight was at Buder Park at our Ice-O-Lated contest a few years back. It was a warm day, we were flying in T-shirts, and a Bald Eagle was soaring over head, with the white feathers looking almost florescent in the sunshine. Doesn't get much better than that! H^^

Dan,   that had to be a few years back. ???

Jim, great pictures and glad you all got to fly. #^

Nothing more spectacular than seeing the Eagles in flight out in the wild.  And has to be special when it's a Bald Eagle.  I was up at Northern Knights field Saturday trying to figure out some engines.  Anybody want a Fox .40?  Then Sunday after Church drove to Topeka to check out the new site.  Next time will have camera so I can take pictures.  This old man keeps forgetting things. I grew up just south of St. Louis within walking distance of the Mississippi river.  In the 50's, as kids we used to take hikes along the RR tracks that ran along the river.  Never ever saw a bald eagle.  In the late 70's, I was living in Dubuque, Iowa and one day while crossing the river I looked to the side and saw a bald eagle flying parallel to the bridge.  First one I ever saw in my life.  It was quite a thrill.  Just a few years later we moved to Vancouver, BC and during the first Winter we were here, a friend told me to go see the bald eagles out a small stream about an hour East of the city.  The wife and I went out on a Sunday morning and parked just over a small bridge and walked up along the stream.  We saw a few bald eagles flying around and going around a bend in the stream we started really looking and counting.  Then we noticed they were everywhere.  We stopped counting at about 250.  Quite a magnificant sight.  About half way to Whistler, BC, where the Winter Olympics were held is a small town named Brackendale,  every winter they do and eagle count in December or January and numbers are between 1 and 2 thousand.  Truly amazing.
