Flushing Meadows Park
« on: September 21, 2013, 09:19:06 PM »
I just moved back into NYC and would like to know if the circles at Flushing are still being used?
I flew there 40 years ago on the grass circle with Dick Kurth and Bob Rey along with a lot of other memorable guys and gals.
Anyone out there still flying? What days?

  Hi Al;
Flushing Meadows has been mentioned here quite a bit and I believe is still used a lot. Some one mentioned another site that is not as desirable but I don't remember what that was. Try the search function with "Flushing Meadows" and see what comes up. You may see some familiar names, and you can contact them through the list.
   Welcome Back to Stunt!

Flushing Meadows has a club base. They will chime in I'm sure. Jose Modesto, Bob Lampione, Neal Beekman, plus others. I believe they fly a few times a week. You can see the circles on Google Maps.

Hi Al,

Flushing Meadow is still going strong. The name of our club is the New York Control Line Stunt Team. Neal Beekman is the President and I am the Treasurer. Neal and I flew there when Dick Kurth was there, so you can see we were in the hobby for a long long time. Most of our flyers are there on Saturday mornings when the weather is good and the winds are below 10 MPH. We were suppose to have a club Fun Fly tomorrow (Sunday) but the weather is not with us this week end. I re-scheduled it for Sunday, October 6th. We would be glad to see you that day if you can make it. In fact, if the weather is good next week end we will be there.  You can keep in touch with me if you want and I will keep you posted.

Flew today in some strong wind for NYC. 10-20 mph.   Neal would have had no problem but was a little too stout for the rest of us.   The sun worked with the wind to make it almost impossible to stunt.  John flew the nicest looking Ringmaster I have ever seen. He got it from Neal so it must like wind as it flew okay.   I flew the E-ARF Flite Streak and it was too light into the wind.  My son Joe came out later with his kids and flew it also but we declined to let young Joe try with the Ringmaster Trainer EII.  He flew it last week in good conditions for his first training session and he has his hands full.  Maybe later today if the wind lays down.  The RM Trnr EII with it's solid wing is rugged but I don't feel like rebuilding it just yet.  A lot of good flying weather  ahead so being conservative with a new flyer is best option.

Thanks Everyone,
I came out this morning and was glad to see everyone
Its a relief that FM is alive and well, lots of memories
Ron, I remember you, you flew with another guy named Don

Flying doubles and triples with Dick Kurth might be a thing of the past for me due to my power chair, but I still can do a maneuver or two from the chair.
I'll plan on coming out whenever possible on weekends and burn some gas with you guys.

Hi Al,

I have to be honest with you. I could not match your name with a face from the past. Then when you mentioned the power chair it rang a bell. I took pictures of you flying at Brodaks in 2011 and they were published in Stunt News. I see you remember me too when Will and I used to fly with Don Paterson.  I'm looking forward to seeing you at FMP. As Joe Daly said, most of us are out there on Saturday mornings, so weather permitting, we will be there next week end.

I'll be out tomorrow to fly, need to drive the Wifey to work by 7am so I'll be at the field extra early. Just like the old days.
My Smoothie should be ready but I could not find my glow igniter. All my batteries, chargers and hookups are in a box somewhere.
I'll bring a dozen donuts, see everyone at FMP  09-28-13

I appreciate the complement. You guys are exceptional flyers. Its nice having such a friendly group of people to fly with.

Thanks to everyone for getting my chair over that 8 inch obstruction at the field entrance.

I'll buy a couple of 50 lb bags of broken sharp gravel if that's ok to even out the entrance. Pee or rounded gravel is to slippery and would act like quicksand.
I don't like being a bother, because I'm used to being the person that helps others but sometimes I do need assistance.

If anyone has already has a ramp started and need assistance, PM me or post it here so we don't duplicate efforts.
I'm pretty good at mig welding and metal forming with steel angle and square tubing.
My wheelbase is 25 inches so 30 inches wide should be enough, too big and the ramp gets heavy. 3 foot long should be enough and can always be shortened.
I'll be able to transport it as I have plenty of room in my van.

Thanks Guys
Al T
