Hi. About twice a year, I've been asking the publisher if/when Flying Models magazine will be coming back. Up until now, they've said there are plans but no timing. But today, I received this reply:

Hi Dave,
Yes we are working forward to that goal now and expect to be publishing again this year.
Sincerely,
Thayer

So, it looks like Flying Models magazine will be coming back this year.

He has been saying that how many years. I don't think it would last, but what do I know as I don't subscribe to any magazines any more since CLW is going under.

"Flying Model's Drones & Quads"

Fingers crossed, checkbook ready. y1

Charles, there are already several Drones magazines—even one published in Australia.

Geoff,
I'll bet there are those kind of magazines in many countries. Forums also. Not a bad thing because people make choices. It's their choice.
Magazines are designed and published to make a profit. If they cannot turn a profit, with any Publication, they will fold up the magazine.
How do they make their money? That's simple, advertisement.
What a marketplace for a Publication, with well over 100,000,000 Drones being sold in 2016, and growing BTW, and that figure is a low guess, many retailers of that product will be looking for all and "new" areas to advertise their goods. They compete with each other just like any other retailer.
So, "They" will advertise in ANY Publication that has the "hobbyist’s interests" in mind.
And not only will the Publication take the money, they have an "in house" sales and marketing dept. that will go after it.
100,000,000 drone and guad customers, and growing. That's a bunch of ad money no Publication will turn down.

I have heard this over and over and it still hasn't come back, I would not hold my breath.

Just get Aeromodeler on Pocket Mags along with PAMPA and your set.

Looks as if a Flying Models Plan Store has just gone live:
https://store.flying-models.com/catalog/index.php
Terms of Use is dated August 31, 2016.
Can we trust it?

The plans catalog seems to work well. I did purchase one set of plans. Now we will see if FM comes through as promised.

Prices for the plans seem to be up a bit from what I remember, but that may be a function of making a profit.... I see it as better than no plans!

Just for the heck of it I ordered a plan. In he acknowledgement I was told that because I was the 3rd person to order a plan I could have another as a gift. I ordered another. this offer was only to 3 persons. Let's see how this works.

Plan ordered on Tuesday, came in the mail today. So far so good.

Same here. I order on Friday. Received notice ordered received and would mail on Tuesday. Then received notice order mailed with tracking number.
Plans arrived today. So far so good...

100,000,000 is incorrect. As of March 25, 2016, "FAA says number of drones in the US will reach 7 million by 2020" (if the fad lasts)

And half of those are stuck up in trees already! A good percentage of the others are broken, and the owners can't figure out how to fie them!
Type at you later,

Unfortunately, most of the people drafting the laws and regulations in this country, are not well enough informed for that responsibility. Fact checking seems to be totally nonexistent as well!

What has these so called drones to do with the Flying Models Plans Service. As if I don't have enough, I seen a couple I don't have. S?P

That's welcome news. However, I prefer to browse a couple of issues before I decide. If DRONE ads make up too much of the ad space, then I will pass on the deal.

Got my 2 plans this morning! One was free. Good service if I do say so. Cost of plans just about what the AMA is doing.

Still waiting for a magazine. :(

If it's going to become another "drone rag", forget it.

What I'll be looking for is "content". If it has articles on building and finishing, and if it includes neat designs, that's what I want. Hopefully they can find this generation's Paul Delgado or Jack Sheeks to design new and interesting FF and CL model airplanes for them.
But just like TV, I ignore the ads, so if they need drone ads to make it work I really don't care since I won't be paying attention to them anyway. It is the content that counts (or doesn't count as in MA)...

Best way to get "content" is to write articles and send them in. Just saying...

Most of that 100,000,000 classify as TOYS not really modeling. All the same you're certainly right about the advertising competition for that money. I think the actual "modeling community" interested in Quads etc. is much. much smaller than that and will dwindle away like plastic airplanes! The big interest in the "modeling" community is with the electronic "techno's" and most of them will move on to something else just like they did from Radio Control airplanes. Some will of course be left that are actually interested in the aircraft rather than just the electrics! But as an industry I predict it will begin to shrink within another year or so. Always happens in the toy industry. They're always looking for something new to sell. Remember the Potato Patch Doll Craze...different crowd but same phenomenon.

... and the Pet Rock group, likewise. Regarding FM, my subscription was paid thru ~May of 2017 ... and I'm waiting to see what will happen.

I ordered a set of plans that arrived in just a few days and they are obviously printed on a "modern" machine. Not the old stuff the previous folks were using. Looks like they put all the plans on computer rather than the way things were done in the past. That could explain some of the delay in getting things up and running.
They were very precise about answering the order and keeping me informed of when they were mailed. They were more expensive that in the "old days" but what isn't?
Good to have that facility up and running again.

Ordered plans for the Bi-slob and got them in couple of days. I hope the magazine is as good. The best all around magazine for model aviation ever.

To me, having a source for the plans would be more important than a magazine. What with the internet and the forums, we read/learn about stuff before any publication could get it printed. What would really set it off is having a copy of the article to go along with the plans. H^^
