Florida Site Survey
« on: August 16, 2017, 06:45:36 PM »
Now that I am back in town I am goung to scout out potential flying spots. I think I found one for flying off of grass. It is adjacent to the Pratt Whitney complex off of beeline highway Jupiter. I am going to scope this out this weekend as well to see if any of the Pratt lots are empty and accessible on weekends. But this ball field looks prime, since there is no housing, or school anywhere near this location and seems maintained with real easy access.

I could be wrong but it looks suspiciously like some kind of access gate at the entrance to the "Grassy area".  Doesn't really look like a "ball field".

Good luck!

Went to street view, there is no gate It is a sand road turn off. While google does not turn up the sand road you can see there is no gated access to that area.

Hmmmm...  Well I was looking at the satellite views and it definitely looks like there is something there.  Looks like a partially closed gate.

Doesn't matter.  I hope it works out for you.  For what it's worth, it's usually not very successful trying to find a flying site on private company property.  Typical company insurance foregoes non-employee use of any covered company property and some even for company employees for non-company affiliated recreation.
Modern insurance is run by Lawyers and they always make the rules!  Often better to contact the local Parks and Recreation Dept.  They are savy about most types of recreation and are usually receptive to at least partial use for most things!  In Tucson we have had a long standing relationship with the parks dept and they have been very good to us!

Peter,
Let me know if this field works.

The group in the Palm Beach/Martin county area flies at the at Halpatiokee park in Martin County on Saturday morning around 8:30 ish (one of the group, Lynn is retired and flies most weekday mornings). From Jupiter it takes about 15 ish minutes to get to the field. Take rt 95 north to exist 101 (rt 76) go left (east) to the first traffic light and make a right around the gas station. This road runs along the park and ends at the entrance. Go left into the park and go ¾ ways around the circle, come to the center soccer field, you will see us. This place has restrooms and electric power to recharge batteries, pretty good field.

I let you know Dennis, seems like it would be a good alternate site should the soccer field be in use. Certainly looks as if you can park right near where you would launch.

Hi Dennis, I do not have a plane to put in the air yet. Can't fly till the pathfinder is done. But I will be checking out this site in person tomorrow.

Peter,
I drove to the site this morning and sad to report the field is there but totally unusable. The weeds are very tall (2 ft) and have overgrown everything. The baseball backstop is there and side benches but you can't actually get out to the center.

Not trying to be smart ass... but from the description sounds like all needed is a good mower and some manicuring effort

In my case I have a city owned and maintained sports complex that tolerates me flying at

In the off seasons the soccer fields I prefer to use get long grass and weeds that can hang up my flying lines and screw me up on stooge take off

I got a smallish battery powered $49 weed eater to clip down my launch take off area

IMO if all else is a go to use the site...long grass or weeds are not a problem... they cut easy

I guess that means that if we mow it, it is ours? Unfortunately I do not have a mower nor do I know anyone that does. Just about everyone here uses lawn guys or the development takes care of the yard work. Rats, I suppose one can rent a riding mower, I'll have to check, except that I do not have a vehicle that can tow a trailer. First we have to get past Irma.

The hurricane should take care of the new site.   Really hope you guys are prepared and stay safe.  My daughter she only misses the by not living in Florida any more.  I miss the two day drives one way.
