Florescent colors are back
« on: June 27, 2014, 07:26:42 PM »
Back in the early 1980 there were quite a few florescent paint schemes. The problem was not getting the color but fuel proofing it. It did not react well with dope. With the advent of KBS Clear Coat I thought maybe it would be possible to do them again. I have been looking for a plane to try spraying it as I have brushed it on all the other projects. I bought two cans of Florescent paint and gave the plane a thin layer of grey sandable primer. This is a very old frame but in good condition.I had rebuilt the nose for 60 size RE motors for testing so it was not painted. It took less than two hours to put on the color and another hour to clean up the overspray. No making tape on this plane. I let it sit overnight and sprayed on the KBS clear. I used 1.5 ounces of the clear and 6.5 ounces of thinner. It sprayed beautiful and a second coat is not needed. Lighter than clear dope because one coat does it. #^

Looks good.  Was waiting to hear from somebody on how much they thinned the KBS clear for spraying.  I have some KBS and looking forward to finishing my new airframe so I can try it.

I recall the big problems were that the fluorescent paints were really heavy and faded very quickly. But this thread reminded me of seeing the Comet dope in the 5 & 10 cent stores in the early '50's. Yellow and sort of merthiolate orange or red? I wonder how that stuff worked? I never bought any of it. I got to be a doper later, in the Aerogloss and Testors era...  ;) Steve

I'm thinking you used and air brush.    I use one for putting on the two part clear over dope.   May have to give it a try on the new projects I'm in the finishing process on.  All Brodak clear so far.

I love it. It reminds me of the late 40's when beach balls, yo-yo's, and everthing else came in those colors. Very refreshing change and the plane looks super.

Here is what I used on the plane. The red in the center of the wings is the old original paint. It was faded very flat with no shine at all. The KBS will make any thing shine. I used this simple spray gun as I didn't want this stuff in one of my better guns. When using this much thinner in it it will set up in two hours. I had a little left over and it was as hard as a rock the next morning. I use plastic wrap at the top of the can and keep the can in a airtight plastic bag. I nee to sand the nose and brush some KBS onto it. The gun shot a bunch of blobs of old dope on it as I got to the nose. It sands like dope and is easy to recoat. It will stick to anything and it stays flexible. I have been flying the Falcon for weeks now and it was my first test on covering.I brushed the Falcon. The clear is impervious to any chemical. :X :X :X VD~ VD~ S?P S?P

Where are my sun glasses?

You could fly that at night it's so bright!

Outstanding to say the least.

RRC Krylon is great!

Looks like the control surfaces were in place when you sprayed the clear. Correct?

It's a beauty!

Charles those flaps have been attach to the trailing edge for a long time. This is a very old plane. It has around 1500+ flights on it.
Thanks for the good vives #^

Does the Diamond Clear topcoat have UV protection incorporated? I would hope & guess it does, but haven't read all the fine print on their website. I was freaked out where the color was listed as "white"...

Mike Haverly said he got some of this and sprayed it without thinning (IIRC), on his "5th Element". He likes it. And he's had to make several repairs already.  :o Steve

Eddy,

I was looking your photos over.

I wish I could see this model just framed, before covering.

Do you have photos of the model framed?

1500 flights!! H^^

I haven't done that in my lifetime. I should say with CL.  ;D

The model really is a good looker!

Charles you asked for it so here it is in early 1988. Landing gear in body and built up rudder. I dropped it on the rudder just before the nats and built a new rudder. I never got to finish the wing gear so I used the body gear for a year. It always bounced with the body gear so I went with the wing gear from 1989 on.
