Flew the Corsair today

Joe and I got a chance to fly the prototype Corsair today.  Joe did a great job of building and bench trimming.  The first flight we just put in a couple of ounces of fuel.  It flew very smooth.  The 40 with an APC 11X5 was plenty of horse power.  I did some quick up and downs with no loss of line tension.  Filled it up for the second flight and it was flying so well that I tried a couple of loops.  Went inverted and tried some outside stuff with no problem.  Long story short I did every maneuver in the pattern on the second flight.  The only change needed will be to drill out the hole on the control horn to give it a little slop.  The controls were a little tight.  Bottom line, great design by Pat Johnson and great build job Joe.

No castor residue.  The pics are before it was flown.  Joe covered it with Brodak covering.

Sam didn't give himself due credit for the Corsair.  He did all the computer work for the laser cutting of the parts, cut the parts, and rode herd on the project to completion.  He also made the plane look very good on its' maiden and second flight.  Very smooth and graceful.

As Sam mentioned, the LA .40 offered more than enough power.  Initially, I thought it would take a .46. It's likely Brodak's production Corsair with a built up fuselage will fly even better than this profile prototype.  

Those gull wings present a striking image as the plane does loops and figure eights.  I think watching this Corsair go through the maneuvers might just bring a grin to the face of ole' "Pappy" Boyington himself!

Glad to hear the Cosair is flying good.  How come it is not powered with a Brodak 40?   I know mine has a lot more power than the LA 40 I have.  By the way did I say the Corsair looks great.  DOC Holliday

The LA 40 just happened to be the engine Joe had available when he built it.  If I fly it at the Flyin you can rest assured it will have a B40 on it.

I've emailed back and forth with Pat Johnson a few times and I think we're going to try an LA 46 on it this weekend.  I picked up a couple of them when I was at Brodak's today.  The amazing thing about this plane is that when your flying it you would swear it has flaps.  I never would have believed it.  Great job Pat.

Flew the prototype Corsair with the LA 46 and a 12X4 APC.  A little fast but it flew great.  So much line tension that 70 foot lines may be in order.  Hope to get in a few flights tomorrow.
