Title: Flap Gap
Post by: Motorman on January 20, 2015, 08:56:08 PM
I forgot to recess the hinges on my Banshee flaps and there's about a 3/16" gap between the wing and flap. Will I really notice a difference at the beginner/intermediate level?

Thanks,
MM

No, since you were going to seal it up with tape anyway.

Only if you try a test and fly it without tape on the hingelines before you tape them.

I did a search but I'm not clear on how to put the tape on. It just goes on one side? How much slack do you leave in the gap? Doesn't grass stick to the exposed part?

Thanks,
MM

It just goes on one side?

Yes.  The bottom, where it doesn't show much.

How much slack do you leave in the gap?

Um -- enough?  If you use scotch tape the amount of slack is pretty non-critical.  Mostly you want to make sure that you can move the surface upward to it's fullest extent.  You can always rip it off and re-do.

Doesn't grass stick to the exposed part?

You get some grass and dirt, but it's not usually bad.  You can always replace it.

Thanks,
MM

You're welcome.

To reiterate what those posts say regarding the type of tape: Scotch Gloss Finish MultiTask Tape. Comes in a plastic dispenser with red/black tartan patterned label.  Been using it for years.  8)

Apparently this tape has been banned in my area because I cant find it anywhere. So Pete has had to install it on my planes when I see him.

Never thought I'd have to scotch tape my airplane.

Never thought I'd have to scotch tape my airplane.

It makes great hinges for RC foamies, too.

...and great temporary fix for tears/holes in silkspan. On one plane my temporary tape patches have been on for over two flying seasons. :o 8)
