First Flight 2007
« on: January 01, 2007, 04:06:18 PM »
The weather here has been unusually mild...today was 52 or so....but we were enjoying about 3" of rain!
I trekked out to the George L Gaydos field to find Reuben suffering from a cold  and not getting out of the car...
I drug my GOTCHA/Fox .35 from the van and ran the lines out....it was 10:21 am Eastern time...copious amounts of lighter fluid were applied and the critter fired right up...I was airborne in about a minute....
The Fox was a but lean and the tricks caused a helluva stutter which caused a fall from the sky while overhead....until about 10'.....then it magically refired and took off at about a hundred.....struck terra mudda and broke the tail off....
Super glue fixed it and the rain eased....a bunch more showed up and decided that since my Gotcha was already wet and wrecked that they would fly it...
A great time was had by all....good chili, too!

It was in the low 40's here in Topeka, KS.  Blue skies and mild breeze if there was one.  We now have a new Slobber in the name of Melvin Schuette of MBS Model Supply.   DOC Holliday

Well Guys,
I drug the family out to fly yesterday in the wind and rain at a local RC event.  After I put up my obligatory RC flight, I put one up with the Slob. We were in the upper 30s.  Today I drug them off to another RC event and after my obligatory RC flight my son (Michael 8 yrs old) had the field to use with his ARF Super Clown so he got his flight in.  My daughter (Grace 13 yrs old) followed up with her "on loan" Super Clown and I got my flight with the same airplane.  Could not talk the wife into putting up one otherwise I would have had a family fly day.  Today was more reasonable with less wind, no rain and a balmy 40 degrees.

It was that way until we went over to meet the CL guys at the "Event for the Insane".  During the drive, the temps dropped, the wind picked up and the rain started.  Of the 6 pilots there, 2 opted to fly (3 of us already had our flights) so only one guy missed out.  On the plus side, he still has his airplane.  We followed this up with the traditional trek over to a local Chinese buffet.

Nothing better to start out the New Year than flying with family and friends.

Lafayette Esquadrille tries to get in a first flight on New Years Day.  When I got out there about 11:00, it was just above 40 degrees in West St. Louis.  The wind was about 15 with gusts to 25.  Joe Thompson and Steve Smith were waiting for me.  I got in a rather shaky flight but it worked.  Steve got in three before the wind blew him out of his overhead eights and he gave it up.

The club has a tradition of writing your name and the date in chalk on the asphalt to show others you were there.  We saw that Allen Van Artsdalen had already flown and left.  I'll bet he was colder than we were.

The engines ran well after I replaced a weak glow plug and Steve used my glow igniter!  A great day to start the year.

We had decent enough weather here in Tulsa and a a lot of the regular flyers made it out to Neafus Field to fly in the new year. The only hiccup was the wind blowing right into the sun all day. Still a great way to kick off the new year.

Hi Bill; Bob Arata and I were going to have a go at it in the morning, but the wind and temps forced a wave off. I have been working on my basement and plans collection all weekend, and wanted to continue with that. We both kept an eye on the weather and he called me about 2:30, and got down to Buder at about 4:20 PM. Bob had already put up a couple flights by the time Sean and I got there, and Sean and I both got a couple flights before the sun went down. I didn't think the conditions would get better, but the wind backed off to a steady 7 knts with an occasional gust to 12 to 14 knts. Not bad at all. Good way to start the year!
Sean should be at the club meeting next Thursday also, before he heads back to Ft, Hood, Texas.
   Type at you later,

Dan, glad to hear Sean is still in one peice and you got some flights in.  Think he can get a 2 week tour of duty in Tuscon for the VSC.  By the way, hardly any wind here in the Topeka area.  Was breezy when I left Shawnee.  DOC Holliday

On behalf of my father(Mike) and myself I want to thank the guy's from the GSCB for giving us a hand getting that old Voo Doo in the air. Not only the first flight in 07 but the first in over 25 years. maybe it wasn't the best plane to pull out but it was sure fun. Dad kept up with it and still can fly his butt off at 72, but it got a little ahead of me and we needed a backhoe to get it out of the ground.Good thing the ground was so receptive.NOW I got the bug.LOOK OUT, this U.M.A.C'ER is back!
   Thanks again,
                Tom

Sorry we missed you but glad you got your flights in.

I am delighted Sean is back "In The World"!  Look forward to seeing him next week at the meeting.  There are worse places to be stationed than Central Texas.  Lots worse!!

The group in Stuart, Florida were out in force around 7:30 am Jan 1.  This is a tradition for this group to face the mid 70 degree temps at this time of the year.

The group this year was Troy Pinner, Toby Aceirno, Chuck Feldman and not pictured, Roy Tranthom.
Missing was Robert Compton who was in the Colorado snow thinking he was still in Florida.
