Rich Cochran won Advanced with Keith Varley snagging second.

Yours truly snuck in an won Expert Profile with The Dirt getting second.

And Jack Mulinix showed off his cool, new Pathfinder. Neat plane.

The turbulence certainly separated the men from the boys.

Howard,

Yea, the second round was sort of thin on the ground for pilots willing to fly. Love that washing machine effect.

And I hit my personal best on Saturday -- I came in last in an event without taking home a trophy (and I broke 200).  I wasn't as lucky Sunday -- I have another last place prize for my Trophies of Questionable Bragging Value collection.
We need a fourth beginner in the Pacific NW.

Howard didn't complete his first flight, and the wind was howling by time for his second round flight. Same story for several others. I didn't get a complete flight in either round of Advanced.

Last time some of us got to fly was May 27, at TMF, when we got booted from the site (they finally found out we were flying there, after 2 or 3 years!). We went to Tacoma Narrows Airport on May 4 & 5, but it was too windy to fly with the existing wind direction. So not much recent flying.

Mike Haverly and I both found we needed to lean out the NV a lot, due to high humidity and low oxygen or baro pressure. We needed to be running 15 or 20% nitro. I've never run anything but 10%, so I learned something, and will be better prepared next contest.

I  realized that electron burners have that as yet another huge advantage...no oxygen beyond pilot requirements!

The old blue F'Twister "KISS" won 1st & 2nd in Sportsman Profile. I got past Mark Scarborough for 1st by not letting him have a warmup flight on it prior to his first official.  I was just happy to have 4 one-flip starts on all 4 officials and get to take it home in one piece. Ok, so I'm easy to please.    y1 Steve

The competition was fierce in Expert Profile. All two of us. A couple of you guys (you know who you are) may need to start thinking about stepping up.

Great - thanks Randy..... now look what you have done..............

Last thing ANY of us need is Paul thinking he needs to step up..... As it is he's already posted a few 600+ scores..

I was thinking about a couple of intermediate guys and a couple of advanced guys. Paul is ribbing me because I only judged on Sunday and didn't fly.

On a further note,, regarding Steve most generously allowing me to fly the KISS twister for profile,, After he went to all the trouble to repair the wing covering just so I could fly it,, ( Steve, you really should work on your application techniques, that packing tape was looking kind of shabby dude!) He allowed me to use my handle,, ( I fly with a cranked handle, his is straight) He even went so far as to make sure he gave me enough fuel to fly the pattern with,, now keep in mind, he did get one flip starts, and my wheels stopped turning at 7 min 55 seconds,, oh and with a clunk tank, no way to do a cut off loop either,, ( which I realized after doing not ONE but TWO attempts at cutoff loops,, DOH!,, still, to score 460 and 470 on my first two flights on the plane, well it was not bad,, I could have done better, but beating Steve with his own airplane would have been crass and in poor taste,,

On further note, Randy allowed me a couple flights on the Ringmaster Deluxe, which was awesome, and very trusting of Randy,, of course, it should be noted that the first flight was about a second a lap slow,, the second flight was almost as bad,, it just wouldnt run right so I didnt do any real tricks,, prefering to leave his plane in one piece,, since it is a nice piece,, this was all in preperation since he was going to allow me to fly it in profile,, of course,, strangly enough, when he went to fly in expert profile,, the engine was once again singing its happy song,, hmmmm coincidence,, ( he muttered something about bad fuel or some such,, ) but hey Randy,, thanks for the offer ,, LOL,,  D>K H^^

I had a great time as usual, nothing like flying in a blender,, early air was light,, and shifty,, later air was heavy ,, and shifty,, I think it changed like three times on me during each flight,, it was LOTS of fun,,

Mark,

Hey, it ran fine for me.   ;D

Looked like a combination of some crap in the line (Marks first flight) and probably just old fuel. I cracked a new can and it ran fine, though Paul W. suggested a slightly bigger venturi, a tweak to the flap, a ....

Hey, I've been fighting engine runs with this thing since it was built. Looks like that is in the rear view now so I can actually start really trimming the thing. Mark, you are welcome to fly it again and hopefully, it will be all set.

well I may just take ya up on it,, seems I still owe you a ride on the Avenger too,, something about the apple cup last year as I recall. Heck had I realized you didnt bring a plane for PA on sunday, I would have let you fly it for Expert,, I think I even have some old 5% fuel thats still almost combustable ,,  ::)

in all seriousness, the offer and trust to fly your plane was appreciated, I thank you,, especially considering how many planes you have watched me splinter over the last few years LOL,, or maybe that was your way of "resolving" your engine run issues,, Now, to get Paul to make some comments about the trim on MY beast,, sigh,

I was sitting next to Dan Rutherford when you were messing with your needle and launching.  He leaned over to me and said "it's got a booger in the needle valve.  It'll pass through and the engine'll go slobbery rich in a couple of laps".

Damned if that wasn't exactly what happened.

That Avenger is an awesome looking design, especially Mark's example. I heard once that he was building a semi-scale stunt ME-109 too. ;D

I watched Keith Varley fly his electric PA model in Advanced. For some reason he got blown out of the overhead 8s, settled into level flight and didn't do another trick.

Walking by the judges they were heard to be asking why Keith didn't finish out his flight.

I told them he was filing a silent protest...

Incidentally, Marilou had a large container of delicious cookies. Whenever I dipped in for more cookies the lid was carefully replaced which is probably why Howard and I had more than our share and many didn't even know of this stash.

Tim,

Weird thing was, I started it and didn't touch the needle from the morning flight I had. Went rich, landed and refueled and had to turn the needle in a turn and and 1/8. Dan was right. It definitely had some crud, but I sure couldn't have guessed since I didn't touch the needle from the morning flight.

Varley was a bit freaked out when two or three of the barricades over by the gas pumps blew over with a mighty clatter. If he'd been flying a glow powered plane, he probably wouldn't have noticed the extra noise. One hashmark for Glow power...finally.  #^ Steve
