The J-3 Piper Cub was designed by Don Hutchinson and was flown by Dale Gleason.  You should see this plane do the pattern.  Don Has plans for it if you are interested.  It was a great day and beautiful weather wish you all could have joined us.

I had a lot of fun Randy and got to see a lot of the guys I haven't seen in a while.  I was going to go back for today but my leg was just hurting to much after walking around yesterday but it did me a lot of good to get out.
The guys at Baton Rouge always do a great job with this contest.   I told Don Hutchinson I had to have the plans to that J-3 Cub.  It was a blast to watch stunt....hopefully I will see all you guys next year at VSC.

I enjoyed the weekend at our contest. We had 17 register flyers. They all brought their A game. The fellowship was amazing there is nothing like flying with people you love and developing friends for life. District 8 is hard to beat.

There was a fine young man in BR who ran scores both days. He was at the contest with his Mother. He told me he was doing his job so well because it was worth it....he was going to be paid four dollars. He did a little better than that. As prizes were going out at the raffle, RO gave the young man his plane that he had flown in Profile Stunt, a Profile Oriental built by Joe Bowman years ago. Worn, certainly, but quite airworthy, well-trimmed with an OS40H. The young man was about eleven or twelve years old, I think. He was incredulous to recieve such a gift. He never let it out of his hands, I think he probably slept with it that night! Some other gifts came his way, glo-driver, fuel, etc.

As I packed to leave, I cautioned his Mom that this wasn't a toy, that the prop was sharp, before she could reply, her son told me, "I'm going to always use a chicken stick!"  The BR control line flyers have him on the right track.

I'm preparing the DMAA Newsletter and would like this polite young man's name....any help from any of you all in Baton Rouge?

Thanks,
dg

I'm getting closer, his first name is Carter.

Dale his name is Carter Alphonso, and his mother's name is Melissa, and yes he enjoyed that model very much.
His Mom told us that he said several times on Sat evening, "Mom come see my airplane"!!

If Cathy took some pictures of them, I'll try to send some to you for the newsletter.

By the way I'm gonna send ya' a private message also..

Sunday after the contest and most everyone was on there way home,  I was just hanging out resting in the shade.  I saw Gil and Nick heading over to the grass circle with Carter and a Twister (Nicks) for his first lesson.  The wind was starting to blow a little.  I saw Nick put the Twister up with Carter kneeling next to him in circle.  Nick did a couple of tight loops and I could tell the Twister had fast controls.  Wind, fast controls, loops, just what you need for a first time flyer.  So I went over and offered my services as instructor and Nick wisely accepted.  I managed to solo Carter on our 2nd flight (without breaking Nick's Twister), and consider that a big accomplishment considering the conditions.  Carter did about ten laps on his own, with me walking around just off his right shoulder just in case. Only once did I have to reach in at the last second and save him from putting it in the dirt. After the lesson I talked with his mother, told her I will let them know when ever I come back to fly in Baton Rouge for some follow up lessons.  I noticed she had been talking pictures, so I asked her to send them to me, and thats what I posted here.  Carter did real good considering the fast controls and the wind.  I plan to bring a more appropiate trainer with me for follow up lessons, and also take a look at slowing down the controls on the plane RO gave him.  Doug Patterson and crew did another great job with the contest.  But helping Carter discover the world of control-line was the highlight of the weekend for me.

Allan,
Thanks for posting these pictures, and for you, Gil, and Nick working with Carter last Sunday, but why do you have my ugly @@!@%$%$#%^&%%&  mug posted!!! Anyhow, Carter and the rest of yawl in these pic's are going to Doug Moon and he will have yawl's mugs in the Jan/Feb issue of "Stunt News" along with an article about the contest and the story about Carter , Richard Oliver, Ray Dore, and the Oriental. Allan you certainly saved me a lot of work in trying to track down the very pictures I needed. Bless you!!!.

That Cub just encourages me in my ambition to build a Cessna C-37 for CLPA.
