Finishing Question: Want flat finish
« on: December 16, 2023, 08:06:22 PM »
Hello Guys and Happy Holidays.

I am building a P51b and want a flat finish.  I will be using 15% fuel.  I will be applying Cali Graphics.

Will oil based polyurethane work?  Automotive 2 part is cost prohibitive as is klaskote epoxy because I am only doing one plane,

Is there any other options?

Thanks

Rusty, I've been using the Spraymax 2k 2 part in the can auto clear. The can has two parts internally,  you pop the plunger and mix it so it's ready to spray right out of the can. I've only used the gloss clear. They make this same product in a matte flat finish. I've seen it online for about $22 a can. I've never seen the flat used but I do believe someone on here had posted a picture some time ago.

Rusty,
Agree with Ken, Max 2K aerosol matt finish (https://repaintsupply.com/paint/aerosols/clear-coats/?page=2) is the way to go for 15% nitro. You need to spray this outdoors with a high quality spay mask. I have used this product and it is totally fuel proof. Once activated it is good for about a week (at room temp), up to three if you keep it in a frig. One light coat then a second full coat is all that is needed. It will go over dope just fine. I have used it over water base Liquitex acrylic also. There is another produce KBS Diamond Clear matt at the same site. This is a one part clear and is very fuel proof. I have used it (the gloss version) on 10% nitro with no problems, not sure above that. Although not as toxic as the Max2K you still need to spray outdoors and wear a good paint mask.

Best,   DennisT

Thanks Guys, that is exactly what I wanted to know.

Dennis, I would like to put on a going away cook out for you.  We can do it behind the church like we did years ago.  The field is still flyable and I use it regularly.

Let me know if we can make this happen.
