I think the EPA regulations (this ain't "political" LOL!!) as to VOC content and such have really messed with the "lacquer type" paints over the years. We can't even buy acrylic lacquer in bulk in NC anymore.
The changes in formulations (I don't know exactly what or when in dope products) has affected the products, though, that part I know. It does seem more critical now as to thinning ratios, and other factors which cause drying times to be affected. The only good thing (at least in my case) has been using the 3608S thinner all along. It does give
me a constant in these processes. I know many will say it (using 3608S) isn't a good idea, but then others swear by it. Windy always made some very pretty planes using it.
Fortunately, things haven't gone so bad as for me to stop using my procedure as to finishing my "good" planes.
