Oshkosh EAA AirVenture
« on: August 03, 2008, 11:48:29 PM »
Just got back. Inspirational in so many ways. Someone said 12,000 airplanes. Maybe. I walked at high speed for hours on two days, still did not cover all the turf full of fascinating planes. Something about four Staggerwings in a row. A line up of Stinsons and Monocoups. At least seven of my favorite 30s Pylon racers. There they are. In metal and wood. Many times I dreamed over the pictures, overwhelming in person.

  Hi Dennis;
    And this year, in my opinion, things were a little subdued due to the economy and such. I just got back last night after working in the KidVenture C/L circles and my son's wedding in Kenosha. It looked to me that the Warbird attendance was down, and there were many, many vendors that were not there that we have grown accustomed to. Some of the vendors displays were scaled down also. Hard to tell about general attendance, and I haven't heard the numbers, but I think the numbers at the KidVenture area were down considerably.
    But it was still an enormous show to take in all areas. One of the area that gets overlooked by some are the forums that are available on many many subjects. Some of the best are the talks given by WW Two vets and by such people as Bob Hoover, Chuck Yeager, Burt Rutan, etc. The WW Two vets won't be around much longer, unfortunately, and I encourage you to attend any that might be held next year.
   The Museum and Pioneer Airport are an attraction all by themselves, and they are included in the price of admission.  We have learned that the best thing to do is to make a plan of what to see and do, and then take advantage of the trams and shuttles that run on the grounds to get from one place to another in order to save wear and tear on your feet!
    I made my dorm room reservations for next year before I left, also!

    The first photo is a Navy N-3-N. Also refered to as, "The Yellow Peril" I do believe. I've actually had a ride in one of these, with Chris McMillin at the controls. The second photo looks loke a line up of Stearmans. I didn't get a chance to get down to the antique area this year. We'll see what next year brings.

Dan is right good old N3N and a side note they were built by the Navy out of Derageable parts, lots of Extruded aluminum not a stick of wood in structure, only wood in them is the flying wires braces.
Only airplane that I know that does not have a VNE. They tell me you can dive it straight down full power and it will try to pull out out with full down held in place. Can't confirm that never had the nerve to do it. Chris might know.

WOW, You guys sure know your planes. I had never seen one of these before until Oshkosh. There were three of them there. The guy said that the aluminum was left over from the Air ship program. When they stopped making air ships that they designed this plane around the extra aluminum. He said Ol Yeller did not sit in the hangar much. They fly it a lot.

I helped do an engine change on one, a lot of work.  Unfortunetlly many of the N3N were used up as dusters.  Did you see the one over by the warbirds with the floats?

Dave,
We did not make it down to the war birds, but the guy told us about it.
