We have a city codes violation person who is fly quads to spy on people's property and then send letters telling them what they need to do.  Would it do any good to send his name to the FAA?  One neighbor says he has a shot gun ready the next time he sees the quad flying over head.

I went to an FAA briefing regarding drones....
FEDERAL LAW saws that if an aircraft (ie:drone, RC plane, etc) is operating outside of a "club" area, it falls into the FAA's area of enforcement. Good, you say? The FAA will treat shooting at them just as if you were shooting at a passenger plane......
Not funny to shoot at drones.
Report them

Have fun

Doc
Please tell you friend to not do that...
These things are here to stay especially for the purpose you are describing.... in next ten years EVERY municipality will exploit Drone capability

IMO The local jurisdiction will always win as long as they are (and probably are) in compliance with fed, state, and local codes

Your Codes Compliance person has every right (without warrant) or seek access to any city or county property to inspect
Same with the County tax assessor
Same with the Game Warden

We tax payers, and voters gave them, that mandate.... and power....contrary to the constitution....
City police and County Sherri's still need a warrant....via a constitutional amendment.... I wonder how many reading know which one

Shooting down a legitimate... in courts eyes... drone,  in the execution of civic duty......will probably NOT be a class C misdemeanor with some $50~$100 fine

The cost of the commercial drones- to do these surveys- puts it into about the same category as blowing up a Sheriff's SUV

NO I am not a drone lover, but a pragmatist... deep fine, and jail time, over something I/you/we have no control over---- is foolish IMO

Well forget the city codes.  Wife and I sat on front porch taking glances at the Eclipse.  The neighbors came over and we let them use the glasses including their little boy.  It got dark enough that when I took a picture of the dogs the flash went off.  Tried holding lens of the glasses over camera lens to try and take pictures.  Well there will be plenty of pics on the internet.
