Title: Favourite engine size?
Post by: rob biddle on April 30, 2007, 03:41:58 AM
 Hi Folks,

A while back there was a post asking what everyones favourite model size was.

In a slightly different context I was just wondering what everyones favourite engine size/ configuration is and why?

I have about 30 engines ranging from .020 up to .49 and most sizes in between. No four strokes (yet).

My definate favourite engines to operate are the old style loop scavenged (baffle) .35s. Rarely temperamental, always start easy and very much a known quantity.

They may not be super competitive in PA but hard to beat for a relaxing afternoons flying.

Oh yeah, most of the models designed for them are pretty cool too.

 Cheers, Rob.

Hmmm Favourite... in what context?

I love the Cox 049s for sentimental reasons... and they are easy to start (for me - I know some would disagree) but these would be my favourite samll engine.
I love the Norvel 049s and 061s because they are really fast and sound great! These would be my favourite 1/2A performance engine.
I like Fox .35s for the same reason you do. These would be my favourite Classic or OTS engine.
I like OS LA series engines because they are easy to start, reliable and parts are readily available. Favourite sport engine.

But most of all, my overall favourite would have to be my 4 stroke Saito 30 because they are just the best.  You just cant beat that lovely purr and consistency in the run.  It has never cut out on me. People who watch me fly come up and say "Gee that sounds nice that plane..."

Cheers

Considering that I've only been back at c/l flying for about three years now, have marginal flying skills, don't have ambitions for flying competion, am retired and have a limited budget, my favorite engine and engine size is the OS LA .40-.46.

These engines are user friendly, relatively inexpensive and there are lots of reasonally priced planes/kits available in that engine size category.

Most anything above a .15 and below .70.. I swore off anything .15 and below years ago, just not worth the effort and I don't weigh enough for the big blocks. Thinking my ideal would be a 46 size airframe weighing in the low 50's with a .51.. Humm, just described my Skylark..

I like the 76 sized engines because you get a large engine and still only have to use .018 lines. O the other hand I also like the smaller sized ships say original Vector size, not too small but small enough to be able to put in a few more practice flights without too much fatigue.

Got a little off track, original Vector size would be around a 50 sized engine.

I'm with Warren L. on this one - the SAITO .30 is my favorite.  y1 y1

It's quite, economical, quiet and super reliable. Also, in the proper aircraft, it does well in competition.

If I was told that I could only use one engine for the rest of my flying days, it would be the SAITO .30.

For nostalgic reasons, the RR-1 .049, but for flying, the AP Wasp .061 is my current favorite.  In the large engines, I have really enjoyed flying with the Saito 30.  Of course now that I have two Saito 40a engines ready to use, that might change.

My "Favorite" engine size is .35

This size airplane is the one I am most familiar with and seems to be the easiest to fly.

The more I fly them, the more I love my PA'S!  The new 75 is my favorite - 5.8 second laps in the wind and total line tension without being excessive.  The consistencey is absolute reliability.

I have two favorite engines The LA46 and the Moki 51. They both have the same characteristics. They have real mellow break and they have same speed performance that makes them fly same speed like a four stroke. I have 4 LA's and 2 moki 51's. Moki is going in the Bear and LA is in my Grinder.
