Fabulous day at Whittier Narrows!
« on: January 21, 2018, 06:15:54 PM »
Instigated by Warren Walker, a bunch of the Knights of the Round Circle gathered at our Whittier site for a day of flying. Living as we do in the blessed SO. CA. climate, we were freezing our buns off in 45 degree weather.

Anyway, by 9:30 we started flying. Antone broke the “ice”.

Attendees were Warren, John Wright, Antone Kephart, Perry Ohal, Mike Meadows and his son Mike, Paul Wescott and his daughter’s friend Marco plus petit moi.

There was good activity over on the combat Circle, but I didn’t go to see who. At least Mike Alurac. The .15 engines they run sound like exceptionally good 1/2As! You won’t find me trying to keep one of those banshees in the air! Definitely not for 75 year old mediocre flyers!

Warren had his twin Pathfinder out for maiden flights, but the engines (Veco .19s) are far from broken in. We have definite proof it will fly with the inboard engine not running. Even on the limited power he had, the plane shows potential.  He also put up a couple of flights on a hand me down, Bob Whitely model. (It pays to have friends in high places!)

If you ever get to visit Warren’s Man Cave, he has some remarkably Collectable models from well known top level builders. Mind you, his own models are front row too.

John flew a Sterling combat model of 50’s vintage. It looked good. I think he also flew a Ringmaster.

Perry flew his Brodak ARF P40. It looks like he can now do all the maneuvers in the pattern.

Mike, at least, flew his Flite Streak, but he was on the South Circle, so I didn’t observe what else he flew.

Antone had a really cherry Magician. He looked like he practices all the time but had not touched a handle in the better part of a year. I hate guys who can do that! The Magician is one of those design that flies well no matter how grubby the construction. The Stork is another design that forgiving. Both are available as Brodak kits.

For myself, there was a Super Clown with a slightly modified Fox 35. Stock p/l, head, backplate, but balanced crank and stuffed bypass. After several runaway flights, Armor-All in the fuel, more bands on the tank, and a new plug resulted in a perfect run.  :D. The model was a swap meet acquisition from Jed Kusik’s moving out of town clearance sale.

They were still at it when I left around noon. Had a marvelous  liverwurst on rye sandwich at Katella Deli. They bake their own Jewish Rye bread on site! You can buy it by the loaf, too. And the pastry selection is to die from!

A great day!  #^
