Far from finished.
« on: November 16, 2013, 03:22:32 PM »
I'm watching clips of Bill Cosby doing his comedy routines on the Comedy Channel. That's funny stuff not like the regular tv junk. He has a special coming next Saturday Nov. 23 on the Comedy Channel 8 eastern 7 central. It's called Bill Cosby, Far from finished.
I may be wrong but I doubt it.

Agreed!  Cosby is among the funniest people ever - along with Red Skelton - who didn't rely on profanity.  When that Special is aired I hope they show some of his early, mid-'60s, routines.

I'm a great Cosby fan. The man leads by example, that's what his shows were all about. I think he improved a whole lot of the lines too.
Back in the '60s when he was a standup comedian, he actually was a lot more crude than in his later work.

One of Cosby's contemporaries in the mid-'60s was Bob Newhart ("The Button-Down Mind Of...").  Absolutely hilarious!

I like crude comedians if they are funny.  Gilbert Gottfried is raucous, vulgar and hysterically funny.

What is funny about foul language?   I remember and grew up with Red Skelton, Jack Benny(the man could get laughs without saying a word),  Abbott & Costello,  Bill Cosby and so many others.  Tried watching one of the so called funny situation comedy shows.   What a farce, if not for the laugh tracks, where is the humor.   Someone says a work and then the laugh track.  Remove the laugh track and I bet most of the shows would flop.  Guess I'm getting old.  Bring back Tim Conway,  Carol Burnett and Harvey Corman.

When I listen to old time comedy shows on cirrus radio I find them silly and not terribly funny. The classic comics aren't funny very often. Red Skelton, Abbot and Costello, Bob Hope, Jack Benny to name a few just aren't amusing at all. The biggest disappointment was Martin and Lewis. Predictable and silly. Modern comedians are much better.

But, do they really need all the foul language?   I was told by a teacher that foul language was a sign of not much education.   Like when a college professor that flew CL in Springfield MO at a contest one time was getting onto a contestant in combat.   I asked my flying partner at the time what he was laughing about.  He said the prof just as much as told him he had an IQ lower than whale dung in the ocean.

Went and seen Ralphie May in Peoria about a year ago. A very colorful comedian and very vulgar. But we did enjoy the show.

Hey Doc,
I have a whole set of CD's of all the old Carol Burnett shows and watch them every so often.  They are terriffic...Tim Conway and Harvey Corman together are absolutely priceless.  Also have Cd's of all a lot of the old Red Skelton shows...Freddy the Freeloader is still one of the funniest things ever in Comedy.
There are collections of all these old shows for sale often on TV that have been put on CD's...watch for them.

Sorry I guess there are different tastes, but I have to totally disagree with this.  Modern Comedy for the most part leaves me wondering why they even bother.  I watched Seinfeld a few times and never laughed once in probably ten shows...talk about stupid and demeaning!  If that's modern comedy you can keep it.
I have laughed a lot at George Carlin in spite of his profanity...He is funny.
None of the modern comics can hold a candle to the old "Clowns" like Cosby and Skelton.
I'm inclined to agree with you on Martin and Lewis; not funny.

Funniest act ever was "Who's on First" with Abbot and Costello!

Finally watched the show last night.  I have it recorded for my use.  I really like the start when he said he told some people he was going to be on Comedy Central.   One started crying cause they thought he was going to use cuss words.  Not one foul word all night and he is still funny.

Listen to Brian Regan. One of the funniest current comics around, and his act is completely clean.
