Fancherized Twister
« on: June 30, 2011, 08:38:01 PM »
Gentlemen,

Was the Fancherized Twister published in Model Aviation or another publication?

If so, which issue?

Thanks,

This might help. More 2B on 2nd post.  H^^ Steve

PS: Pretty sure you can get actual plans from PAMPA membership services (Jim Snelson at CLC).

If you want to build a killer Twister build a new stab/elev. that is 22 inches long and 3 inches wide and  3/8 inches thick. Same shape as the original piece for the elevators but longer to match the stab and tapered to the trailing edge on the elevators only. Add half ribs to the wing to better hold the covering to the airfoil shape or use a molded leading edge. I mounted a Fox .40 and OS LA .40 8 1/2 inches from the wing leading edge to the spinner back plate. Balance the plane 6 1/2 inches forward of the wing trailing edge/flap leading edge. APC 11 x 4, 12 x 4 and 12.25 x 3.75 props all work very well on either engine.
I may be wrong but I doubt it.

Hi Glen,

I'd love to have a file of that plan as well.  As you probably know, the original was "kit bashed" with nothing more than a calculator and a wet finger in the air.  I get a lot of requests that I can't fulfill and having a digital version would be a great help for me.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks,

It never ceased to amaze me that Sig never put two and two together. Why didn't they realize that “our version ain’t so hot, and Teds version is pretty good. Why don’t we contact him and see about dropping our version, (which ain’t so hot) and do his version.

Yeah-yeah, that the way, drop the crappy version, and build the good version!! By god, I think we just may be on to something!!

Maybe they don't know about the Fancherized version. New owners, ya know. I'm sure they're up to their eyeballs in getting the products flowing, without changing anything. But you're right, it would be nice. A revised Banshee would be sweet, too, but don't get your hopes up.  H^^ Steve

Some one in an answer above mentioned that the stock Twister may be "not so hot." Nothing can be further from the truth!. I have mentioned be fore when this subject comes up that there is a local guy here that used a Twister to go from Beginner to Expert, and it was the SAME SINGLE AIRPLANE!!! Must have worn out three OS FP.40s along the way, but it was the same airplane built box stock. And he won his share of contests in the Expert class with it also. Perfect example of what sticking with a design that you like and practice, practice, practice being the fastest way to Carnegie Hall! y1 And that building a straight, well trimmed model of ANY kind is one of the keys to success. I would recommend also that a tip weight box and adjustable leadouts be added. I would build one stock, then build the Fancher version and you can see first hand what the differences are. I also answered this post to bump it up near one that some one else just posted with a similar question.

I agree with Dan, that a stock Twister is a great vehicle to learn how to fly the pattern.  I am not sure that the improved version (and I do think the Fancherized version is better) will serve the beginner as there will be a lot of crashes and the new version needs more building time. I have watched the famous green Twister of a very good St. Louis flyer go from Beginner to Expert with the "same" Twister.  You did not want to fly against him.  He was deadly with his Twister.

I do encourage new flyers to decide upon which profile they desire to fly.  Build three of them exactly alike and have two stunt tuned .40/.46 engines of choice.  Thus one or two crashes and their respective parts can be assembled into a new profile.  Paint them three different colors.
