I doubt there is a plan for the Fancherized Twister, but I thought I would ask. I am looking for an electronic plan (PDF, JPEG, GIF, etc.) of either the Fancherized Twister or the regular Twister. I am compiling a bunch of articles, etc about the plane and I would like to include a plan. Doesn't have to be anything fancy. If anyone has one, please let me know. Thanks. H^^

I think I can help out, Glenn. If not, contact Wynn Robins.

Ted's "Fancherized Twister" articles are posted on Heman Lee's "Aeromaniacs" web site. That is all most use to construct the plane...I made two of them, great fliers both. 8)

I actually have more than one article on file, I just wanted a plan that I could use as well. I want to create a PDF with all this stuff compiled in it for reference. I too built one, but haven't "successfully" flown it yet! LOL It caught on a weed on its maiden flight and needed to be rebuilt. It's done now and waiting for Spring, which should be four or five weeks yet. HB~>
Thanks to everyone that responded. Bill has what I need and I thank him for that. H^^
-
yep I can e-mail it to you - as Bill said....let me know if you still need it.
-
Mr Kruger sent me a very nice CAD drawn file that was approved by Mr Fancher.....so I am pretty sure its definitive. LOL Thanks everyone, really appreciated all the help.
Hi Wynne. I wouldn't mind seeing the drawing you have, if you don't mind. There are way more ways to skin a cat as my gran used to say. You know...when I was a little kid, that saying used to creep me out, coming from that sweet little ol' lady! LOL LL~ H^^

Yup,
Bob worked very closely with me and I believe his beautiful CAD drawings can be considered definitive!
For a project that was really nothing more than a "what should I do for a couple of columns" (Model Aviation Stunt column that I wrote for a few years) the Fancherized (a name that grew on it well after publication) Twister has had a remarkable shelf life. I'm very pleased that some people have found it of value.
Here's a public thank you to Bob for making the effort to produce accurate plans...something I had received numerous requests for previously but couldn't accommodate because I'd never done so (draw the plans, that is).

Glenn:
Are you going to post the plans somewhere? If not, I may be pestering Mr. Kruger -- that seems like a nice plane to build.
-
Hi Tim....check your email! H^^

Ted's being his usual modest self in describing his articles as just "a couple of columns" in Model Aviation Magazine. They are actually filled with good info and tips on how to build profile stunters. It would be worthwhile to include them with the plans. 8)

There are two articles on the Fancherized Twister and one article on the "Armourized" Top Flite Tutor. I have all three articles plus the plans CAD drawn by Bob Kruger, on one file. The drawing was done with heavy involvement of Ted Fancher and he himself said that they are indeed the defintive plan. I am very pleased to have this complete set for myself and any others that are contemplating building one. H^^

Hi Tim....check your email! H^^
I did! It looks good! Thanks!
Now I just need more building time.
I've got a K&B 40 that should work for this (or be too much engine, maybe).

Glenn: I am currently in the "ALLENIZATION" of a Fancherized Twister. Many upgrades to make it stronger, fly better, etc., etc.. I woulde be glad to send you some pictures ...I have taken about 70 at this point of what I have done and how it was done. I need your mailing address and I'll send you some of my build pix...no cost to you. Let me know what you think..here's my e-mail address for your convenience to send the mailing address. : allen.wm42@yahoo .com. Many thanks..Bill Allen/AMA911708.

Tim, I ran a K&B #4055 for awhile. It's really heavy...really heavy...and not as much umph as a .46LA. The best thing about the K&B was that the bolt pattern is the same as the .46LA, by the way. It did run nice. This was the ABC stunt version. Did I mention that it was very heavy and didn't put out that much power? :## Steve

Hi Steve,
We got an ABC version (Brodak sold them for a while, too, at first) #4055, IIRC, also. I have never even broke it in! Don't know why.........
I DO have a "Stan Powell" K&B .40 (like Les used in his Stiletto) and it is a pretty good engine, but not real "practical" (and OLD now! LOL!!) since you had to go through a gazillion parts to get it right (reference the "Stiletto Chronicles"). When the 4055 came out, Stan and Dave Hemstraught (plus a few others, the guys in Norfolk, etc., ) gave them a try. Stan said "it is ok", but not like a good one he set up. IIRC, Mike Garmon, John Tate, plus probably Willis Swindell were instrumental in getting the ABC K&B set up and having John produce it as a stunt engine. AFAIK, Steve Fitton has the original "Mike Garmon/Brodak Warbird" (the P-51B) and it still has the K&B ABC .40 in it. Flies amazingly well with the heavy engine! I think they can be made to run pretty good if you really want to.
The changes in engines that we use now in "everyday" stunt use, as compared to the late '70s-early '80s, etc., is night and day, anyway. It is amazing that the OS .46LA is really a pretty darn good, "everyday" stunt engine in a time of "high timed", high rpm R/C engines....
But, if you have one of those K&B #4055, you might as well use it! LOL!! (especially if one tends to build a little tail heavy ;D )

Glenn;
Actually, there is one discrepency.
When I did the plans many years ago, what I went by was a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a.... (you get it) of the article. My original 'Model Aviation' mag that had the details and pictures had long been lost in one of the many moves I had back when I was in the Army. The actual pictures of the FT were somewhat garbled. I could figure everything out except the rudder shape, which I had to approximate as best I could. After consulting with some fellow flyers who still had the original mag, I realized my "rake" on the LE of the rudder was greater than Ted's. I querried Ted and asked if I should change it, his words were "leave it, it looks better than what I came up with."
The rest is as Ted described in his article.
Regardless, its a great flying ship.
Just one note - and some will disagree with me on this. The wing as designed benefits from a doped finish, e.g. it needs the resistance to tension that doped silkspan or silk provides. Monocoat (and other plastic coatings) are wonderfully tough, but they do stretch a little when under load, albeit they return to their original state once the load is removed. I had a box stock Twister wing fail once just from flexxing after about fifty flights, and it was not due to shoddy construction... :-) I could actually feel the wing "flexxing" during flight. If you use plastic film covering on this wing, I strongly suggest some additional bracing between ribs along the spars to reduce the flex.
I have also built the Twister wing with a C-Tube construction method, e.g. 1/4" spars top and bottom, 1/4" square LE, with sheeting and capstrips. That will compensate for the slight stretch of film coverings. If you want a .pdf of it, let me know.
For a sport flyer who likes to bore holes in the sky, the Twister and its derivatives is hard to beat.

Hi Bob. I would love the PDF of the wing change. I cover almost exclusively with monocote, etc., cause my wife has breathing troubles that dope and paints exacerbate. I was actually planning on building the wing the way you describe, because of the wing flex situation. As far as the rake on the verticle stab....I don't think that matters, it looks perfect to me. I mean what the heck, thats the first thing everyone changes anyways! LOL
The wing change will make a good addition to the article/plan set I'm putting together as well, cause lots of people can't use dope for one reason or another and an alternative is always a good idea.
Thanks a lot for all your help in putting this stuff together. Really appreciated. And to all you otherws who have made suggestions about building, motors, etc., a big thanks to you as well. This started as a simple request and ended up being an excellent article.

Check your email. The only thing you need to do is draw in the leadout cutouts.
Note - I did this with a 1/4" balsa flap in mind rather than the original 3/16" flap from the kit. Adjust accordingly.
Best of luck.

Thanks Bob. They look good. I would be useing 1/4" anyway for H^^the flap and tail surfaces! LOL

Hello All,
I just purchased the twister kit a few months ago from sshobbies. Is there a pdf or autocad file available for me to work with (Fancherized)? I already have the excellent article on building it (Fancherized).
Thanks,
