Title: Fake emails
Post by: RC Storick on February 19, 2025, 12:45:52 PM
I am getting reports from a few people that they are getting emails from forum members  (people you know) Asking for money. If you are inclined to give it to them CALL them first. These are fake emails. Do Not send money via gift cards.

Mr. Storick, feel free to delete or leave live for a few days...as you see fit.

Yup...and I had a running email with the one reaching out to me. The fellow was using the same email address as the other forum member. Eight messages were passed back and forth until I challenged the sender to continue the conversation here. The messages stopped once the sender understood I was trying to continue "not in email."

You should know you are the impacted member from the following:
Mr. Keith, you sent me tracings of the P-63 several years ago. I've been trying to call you so you know your account has potentially been compromised. I hope all is well with you. 944_Jim in NE MS.

here is the email

I'm looking to get a UberEats E-gift card for a friend's daughter whose birthday is today. She's currently battling liver cancer. I tried to purchase it myself, but my card got declined. Would you be able to buy it on Amazon and send it to her email? I can provide her email address and reimburse you for the amount spent.   Let me know, please

Keith

Check the email addresses in these messages. Typically they are NOT the real e-dress for the person being imitated..

You mean you *aren't* a Nigerian prince? And that the Nigerian Royal Family *doesn't* use gmail for official business?

Regarding this latest scam .... The first email I received did have the correct email address. The further correspondence used the correct address (in one word)+@gmail,com.  You don't notice this until the correspondence starts to stink.  I don't know how its done.  How can someone send an email that looks precisely like its from the party, but obviously isn't?   This is not a Nigerian scheme, it seems he knows the players and connections.

The first one of these scams that hit me was a response to "wanted to buy" ad I placed in the Classified section.  I got and email from Sparky suggesting I contact a certain person at email jeffposseltt@outlook.com.  I  did.  He had the part and wanted $ for it.  Please send me an Apple gift card for the amount.  OK.  Two days later, he discovered that he had mispriced the item.  Something stinks, but what the hell, I did.  Two days later, another email, he forgot to include shipping.  STOP.  Once again ..... the original email looked precisely like it came from Sparky.  The other thing of interest was that he knew what the value of the part should be.  Interesting.

I found a car parts forum that had a problem with the same individual.  I filed a wire fraud report against the name, jeffposseltt@outlook.com.  Any dealings with this email should be avoided.

Bill, you understand html's, and such ..... how can an email be sent where it looks like it came from someone else?

I, too, got a bogus-looking email from Keith’s real address a day or two ago.

I too got two emails from the legitimate email address.  The verbiage was on target, but the request and in one case spelling and punctuation were not what I’d expect from the legit source

On another forum “they” are hijacking (hacking into?) legitimate accounts, then doing whatever they want.  I’m sure they can do the same thing with generic email accounts without too much trouble.  Or maybe instead of doing it by hand, they could be using AI or a simple script to automate the process, giving them the ability to attack several accounts at the same time.  They only need to succeed once then Katie bar the door!

I got 2 emails from Keith asking if I use Amazon. These people should be thrown in to a wood chipper.

I also got two from Keith.  The first was a simple question "Did you get this" same I would do if I were emailing someone I hadn't corresponded with in a while.  It was a valid email address in my whitelist for Keith, so I responded.  I got a return asking if I used Amazon prime.  I typed out a response but before I sent it, I noticed that the email address was different, so it never got sent.  I sent Keith a PM alerting him.  Apparently, Keith's contact list has been hacked along with just about every other address in the world.

Me too,  I got it.   I messaged Keith and told him maybe he had been hacked but I really don't understand the point of entry with these robbers.  Guillotine!!

Hopefully, these "Fake emails" that some of you have received should have stopped since yesterday morning (Wednesday, Feb 19).

I have not received any emails for the past two days.  My provider is supposedly getting these sent to me in the next two hours.  Hopefully, I will get caught up on some of the matters that I have been working on with some of you.

As many have noted, this is exactly what my own experience was: two seemingly legitimate e-mails from Keith, the correct e-dress and all, just asking me to conform I had received it.

Since the e-dress was legitimate for Keith, I responded.

The second message had the bogus look-alike e-dress which ended the exercise for me.

With this message from Keith, I think the path the scammer vermin used was to hijack Keith's e-mail account at Comcast, use it to send the firstx2 emails to all of the contacts, and then was able to get all of the responses (such as the one I sent).

Maybe I should feel slighted, because I haven't received any emails from Keith. He's probably blocked me, anyway.

However, I did get a friend request on facebook from the Hurling Commander, and I'm pretty sure that's not really from Larry F., also known as F'n Larry. We sent PM's back & forth and he never answered any of the questions I axed. Eventually, he stopped.  CLP** Steve

Apparently 50 percent of all people spend their time trying to steal money from the other 50 percent of people.
