Title: facebook
Post by: RC Storick on March 12, 2013, 11:26:18 AM
After the nasty letter I sent them about they are not the government and not going to get my ID,credit card, marage cert and a copy of my phone bill they have let me back in. Do not fall for this intrusive action. They are not a necessity. They may think they are but fighting the system has worked. I made it clear I would be letting the world know of their actions. Be forewarned!

This is a true tactic they tried to pull on me not a phishing scam.

Given that parasites like facebook, Twitter, etc, make money based on the idea that they can acquire, mine, and sell personal information, this is not surprising. If they are not gathering your data they are going broke, that's what they do.

Well I can not find the original email but they did ask for all that info. Under the guise to verify I was a real person behind the account.

That still sounds like a scam.  I have two F-Book accounts and all they asked for was a working email address.  Having that, they send a verifying email which you respond to and then are allowed to complete registration.

There are many phishing schemes that certainly look genuine, even down to the logo and color.  The biggest clue is when they offer a link to click when you respond.  That link is dirty.

Think about it, many younger people on F-Book don't have a phone bill, aren't married and don't have a credit card.  Yet, they are enrolled without issue.

So far I've never been asked for this type of information but now I'll be wary of it. Thanks Robert!

I have several facebook friends who were banned for posting shall we say Conservative leaning posts.  They simply started another page but they can and do shut you down if you express political ideas they do not agree with.

Hmm, that's interesting, I am just about as conservative as they come there and I don't hold back. I've never had any problem, nor have I ever been asked for more then a working email addy.

There is a very simple answer to facebook...look in the mirror and say to yourself...Self, why do I need these people, they have nothing I need.  Then just don't go there!   n1 n1

It works...I know!   y1 y1

Same here. I've tracked down a lot of old friends and such. Been useful for that. Just have to be selective about who you associate with.

Perfect...but make that 67 years, and I don't pick up the phone that often.  :-\

I have found it fun. I have hooked up with a bunch of my high school friends I haven't seen in over 40 years.

That is exactly why I got an account...my high school's 40th reunion. Been in touch with many since then during the last 12+ years.

Our club Knights of the Round Circle www.kotrc.org just recently put up a facebook page at www.facebook.com/KnightsoftheRoundCircle and had a new prospect at last nights meeting as a result. facebook has  been good for me connecting with old friends on personal level although I'm not a great big fan of FB. It seems to be a good resource along with Stunthangar.com of course for our club members to post their pics and videos. Being new to the club's president position I am proactively trying to market our club as best as possible using this free resource at hand is one simple tool to assist in that effort. Considering even one guest as result of this endeavor is a good start and I hope some would agree.

Las Vegas Circle Burners has a real nice one: http://www.facebook.com/groups/619919831356612/629077743774154/?notif_t=group_activity

Alberta Controlline Flying:  http://www.facebook.com/groups/242761002416604/

facebook can certainly add a new perspective... here we are largely faceless and for the most part kindred by our shared interest in this hobby, but facebook gives the opportunity for a more balanced offering of getting to know one another. No hiding behind some jive moniker.
I feel as though I let certain individuals get the better of me and I slipped into the discourse that ultimately made myself and a few treasured friends and aquaintances appear to be less gracious than they are in "real life"   To the point that I am paranoid to post here any more (even this comment)  I hope your ok with me posting links Sparky.. if not delete them.

Plus I re-met my High School sweet heart after 30 years and we are now engaged to be married... so yeah facebook changed my life for the better... big time! But I also agree, add friends with caution.

Do not like facebook! Not surprised that they sell information etc. E mail serves all my needs.

If it hasn't registered yet, please note that any e-mail that asks for your personal information (the kind aiding in identity theft), whether  or not decked out in authentic looking logo, is a scam. I get them all the time and NEVER respond at all. If they ever need something, they will ask you to access their own pages. Just don't ever give out SS numbers and the like.

FB is a great annoyance, and their technical help seems non-existent, but I have hooked up with long lost friends and have enjoyed posting  and reading.

I have "conservative" and "liberal" friends who post political stuff. No one has been censored or removed. I've never seen so-called liberal media. I am a true conservative, which means among other things that I keep my nose out of other people's private lives, but you'd call me the opposite. Nonetheless, while you can access my FB page at your own risk, regardless of political affiliation, no one has yet interfered with my pages and access. I honestly do not think FB cares about anything, including customers (now law suits are another thing). It's those other guys who pressure the internet operators that you need to treat warily. 'enough paranoia for now. Lots of social media and search machines are annoying, but model planes seem to benefit from FB pages, and we have a NCCL club page too.

Too many companies and stores asking me to "like" them on facebook.

Social media is being taken over by commercial interests.  I don't participate.

I guess they're giving me a break.   haven't received an FB E-Mail with lists of friends I haven''t even heard of and some pics  I don't want to know.
