This just kills me! FB will not allow me to be a member, based on my last name which they say is fraudulent! Several of my book signing events are posted on FB, but I can't access that because of my name.

Hi Gil,

I have been on facebook since It started.  Before that there was a social media site called "My Space" and I was a member there too although facebook killed it.

I have two pages, one for just family and one for friends and model airplane groups (which there are tons of).

It is a good way to network but just be aware, the administrators of facebook are very left leaning and of the liberal persuasion.  That is not a political statement, rather a truthful one.  But, if you stay out of the trolling and political fray, it can be a lot of fun.

I actually started two groups on facebook that dealt with CL models but turned the administration of them over to two people who are members here as well.  They have grown to several thousand members now.

This forum and Leonard's are still the benchmark for CL Stunt but the facebook groups do serve a purpose and offer every genre of model airplanes available.

As a side note, I share Joes frustration, they have some real quirks you have to deal with sometimes.

when i was a volunteer firefighter, i had a buddy in a neighboring department that was going for EMT training.  The State wouldn't even let him sign up for the class because they thought his last name was fraudulent!  He had to go to tippy top administrators with his social security card to prove his last name was in fact "Greathead"!

it was, and still is quite comical!

Yes it is, but if I was him I’d be down at the courthouse to change it.

BTW, I’m on facebook too

I joined FB only at the urging of my daughter, so that she could send pictures and news of her son's activities in sports music, school, etc.  I haven't posted anything personal, and certainly nothing I wouldn't want my family to see.  Nothing on FB can come back to bite me.

I have an account.  Don't use it a lot.  As a matter of fact I've been to their HQ a couple of times (my son works there).  It's an awesome place to work.  The perks and benefits available would blow your mind.  With sales of $2.5B....a month, they can afford it.  Most folks that complain about FB likely don't understand what FB really is.

Their Aquila drone is hanging from the ceiling in one of their newer buildings.  It would be kinda cool to work under that everyday.

Facebooger (as my friend calls it) can be useful and fun.  It is easy to post, and find others who have the same interests.

It is entirely too easy to get upset or caught up in all the ranting and raving.   Liberal, conservative, religions, artiest, love guns hate guns.

I just stay out of it.  I post what I do, and communicate with my friends in polite way.  Keep heavy decisive opinions out of it.  Then its fine.

Hello Sparky

I'm afraid the data mining is bigger then just facebook ie from Wikipedia it states:
PRISM is a code name for a program under which the United States National Security Agency (NSA) collects Internet communications from various US Internet companies.[1][2][3] The program is also known by the SIGAD US-984XN.[4][5] PRISM collects stored Internet communications based on demands made to Internet companies such as Google LLC under Section 702 of the FISA Amendments Act of 2008 to turn over any data that match court-approved search terms.[6] The NSA can use these PRISM requests to target communications that were encrypted when they traveled across the Internet backbone, to focus on stored data that telecommunication filtering systems discarded earlier,[7][8] and to get data that is easier to handle, among other things.[9] ..........

The documents identified several technology companies as participants in the PRISM program, including Microsoft in 2007, Yahoo! in 2008, Google in 2009,  :) facebook  ;D  ;)  b1  #^  :##  in 2009, Paltalk in 2009, YouTube in 2010, AOL in 2011, Skype in 2011 and Apple in 2012.[22] The speaker's notes in the briefing document reviewed by The Washington Post indicated that "98 percent of PRISM production is based on Yahoo, Google, and Microsoft".[1]

Here in New Zealand we do our bit as a 'Five Eyes' partner being a member of AUSCANNZUKUS"
which Wiki states:
"is an abbreviation for the naval Command, Control, Communications and Computers (C4) interoperability organization involving the Anglosphere nations of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It is also used as security caveat in the UKUSA Community, where it is also known as "Five Eyes".

There all watching and listening but as a humble aeromodeller I don't think I have anything to 'share' that would interest them !  H^^

I think it's actually facebook youse guys are referring to?  I am a member, but only because of the ACFC (I think) group that Bruce Perry put together. LOTS of good CL modelling information, plus pictures from the Namao skoolyard flying site that I like so much. Great bunch of guys, too. I have made one post on my page in 3 years or so. No pictures of my cute dog, no pictures of my dinner before I scarfed it down. Otherwise, I don't see any reason for it. Email still works fine.  y1 Steve

personally, i'd be far more concerned about data mining from search engines, web browsers, credit card/paypal transactions, online shopping, "smart" devices that are voice enabled (ALWAYS passively listening....), same smart devices that have location ability (even if disabled, they know where you are due to your phones address and what towers you're talking to...) WIFI enabeled home security solutions, etc. etc. etc. more than me sharing smart ass memes and pictures of my dogs on facebook.....

given the number of cameras in the US (CCTV, security, speed trap, smart phones, etc.), the average US citizen can pretty much count on being exposed to a camera, according to some studies, more than 70 times a day.

end of the day, if the gov't or any other entity wants to know anything about you, they do.  don't hate the player, hate the game.

I have a facebook account but it's been "Hacked" so many times by fraudulent interests trying to sell other people stuff, in my name, that I gave up on trying to use it!  As far as I can tell there's no way to contact anyone responsible for face book to solve the problem.  I did for a time enjoy the convenience of being able to contact friends and relatives quickly but it just became a total "weight" trying to explain the "Hack" job to everyone.

Now I just don't go there!!  Too bad there are no responsible administrators to fix problems.  The "Creeps" just make it NOT worthwhile!

This is the best advice anyone can give concerning security on any electronic communication system. We are required to change passwords every 90 days at work,  I cannot duplicate a previous used  password , a real pain sometimes , but it works and is government requirement for Vendors ( DTNA ) ISO standards .

Each time I change my work passwords , 3 different systems, I update my personal passwords to the same , cuts out all of the hacking and spam issues,

I enjoy facebook for the family stuff, pictures and really enjoy the model airplane groups ,

I do not feel like big brother, the government or any other group is interested in anything I do or say online , if they do they are pretty hard up for information .

I have a personal facebook account, one for my drag racing, and one for the race series we're trying to get off the ground.

Seems like everyone you wave to wants to "friend" you. I don't accept a lot of friend requests. I have noticed most that I haven't accepted are family members.

Don't get me wrong, I do facebook to death but, to me it's just a small life enhancement in the scheme of things.

What makes me laugh is when someone says they don't do "social media" and yet they are on here.

This is my kind of social media.  I am not into 2,000,000,000 other using poking at my posts.  The weird censorship and other behinds the scenes shenanigans aren't attractive either.
I get all the cute kitty videos and adorable dog videos I need on my wife's phone.

This just kills me! FB will not allow me to be a member, based on my last name which they say is fraudulent! Several of my book signing events are posted on FB, but I can't access that because of my name.
Now, who...Gives …. a #$%^^$#@!!!

Hey Joe,

Try using your middle name in place of your last name.  Completely allowed and a lot of people do this to maintain a level of anonymity.

"Alexa, get me Mr. Trump's tax returns."

Alexa doesn't generally commit crimes for you, which is what you are asking for, among others, The Privacy Act of 1974.

It does answer questions like "Alexa, show me nutty-as-a-fruitcake impeachment fantasies" - then it connects to a live audio feed of MSNBC.
