F4U CLPA plane
« on: August 22, 2021, 05:12:02 PM »
I recall seeing an F4U stunter at the NATS in somewhat recent history. Any chance someone can help jog my memory?

Thanks...

Jack Sheeks did one that was published in November 1978 Flying Models and more recently one was done by Kurt Mullinix.

Jim, is this the same guy that flew one at Las Cruces back in the 90s?

Bruce, I don’t recall a Corsair at Las Cruces.  I don’t believe Kirk Mullinix was ever at the Las cruses contest

    Kirk Mullinix.

     Brett

Kirk Mullinix built and finished some of the nicest CLPA models we have seen.  He was an expert builder and an expert machinist.  The finishes on his airplanes were flawless.  His Corsair was a work of art.  It had full span flaps.  He machined the universal joints for the flaps to work across the span of that inverted gull wing.  (I held one of those u-joints that he made and could not figure out how he put it together.)  Of course, there was a split flap horn.  There was almost no discernible play between the left and right flaps or in the flaps from the root to the tips.  Kirk flew in only the one Nationals where he placed 5th with his Corsair.  (I need to look up the record to see which Nats that was.)  He was always a contender in the Southwest contests.

Kirk was one of the nicest people I ever met in the control line world.  He left us way too soon.

Just one correction to Keith's post: I was a judge at the 1981 Nats when Kirk placed fifth in the Top 5 fly-off. He flew great and his plane was gorgeous... but it was not a Corsair! It appeared to be an SV-11 variant of sorts (I don't remember the name on the plane) and it was white with green and gold trim.

Great memories of Kirk abound... Bob Hunt

Bob,

Thanks for the correction and reminding me that this old brain does not always remember things correctly.  Nevertheless, Kirk is missed.

Absolutely, and invariably had a positive attitude. Kirk was the prototypical "Southern California Guy", probably out surfing or cruising in his Chevy most of the time, not bothered by anything.

I was at the NATS the year he was there with the Corsair, but can't pin the year down. It was one of the years that Sean flew Junior or Senior stunt, and may have been one of the years that Paul Walker flew the B-17, if that helps anyone out. I only got to see it from a distance, but even then no doubt about what it was!!

Kirks white w/ green trim 5th place Nats plane was named the Chandelle, if I recall correctly.
He was always friendly and happy to be a part of the stunt world.  He and I talked vegetable gardening after we were tired of airplane talk.

True to the article, it has not flown since. However, the B-17E has flown again, and with electric power. Alas, I am just to old now to handle that beast.

Being particularly fond of the F4U, this would make a terribly interesting project!

I have more hi-res photos of the Corsair mixed in with others from our contest.  Need to find the time to offload them from my new DSLR, cull, edit, upload, etc.  Hopefully soon…
