Title: excess or......
Post by: dennis lipsett on April 12, 2022, 05:22:19 PM
I was restoring order to the workshop and when done I decided to see if the balsa wood needed reorganization.
Even better it was all premium and light. I always bought contest wood and accumulated a lot of it over a long career building models.
Ok so how much was there. about 400+ sheets, To justify it I used to build 6/7 models in a year and always looked to replace what was used.
It didn't help matters when Walt Umland  was ordering wood and I put a large order in with his. And I got the advantage of mostly light wood.
So remember when most of the kits were average/ Remember Sterling?Jetco etc.. You can make a good flying model even if it's a 'pig if you discard the bad stuff and replace it with good wood

To move forward. I was building designs done by Pat King and he had his kits cut at RSM so it made my balsa collection a hobby. He is also finiky about wood. So it's a hobby .I still can't walk away from a good piece of wood.
I can/t really fly c/L much anymore as my neck and right arm is useless most of the time. I can however fly RC very well.
Remember that there are still enough building to appreciate a really nicely built model, done with the right stuff

So, um...would you consider selling some of that, and where are you located?

Who were you building 6/7 models a year for?

Yourself or customers?

Charles,
I always built for myself. I always did 2 at a time as I get tired of one and work on the other. I sold them off after a few years or the workshop got crowded. Even my garage is always stuffed with models. some were for newer flyers and 2 were for me. New flyers are pretty much a thing of the past as there is no C/L activity any close location. I only need 6 hours of sleep to this day so you might as well make the time productive. I don't build CL anymore as it is a dead end for CL in this area. It is a shame that there are no pictures on Pat kings vendors site as there were pictures of some of the prototypes built and available. I did like building 60 sized profiles. I built 3- 60 sized profiles for Pat. A profile Fitestreak, Ringmaster and Magician. Think the Magician got a 1st at some contest in the Philadelphia area. They are really good flying models and wish that some would take up the task of building one of them. They always get a favorable opinion on them. Even vintage combat models got built. Some of those have been to the  vintage combat show in New Jersey. Even a Del Gatto Whipsaw got to the meet one year.

Brent,
Hoarders never sell, after all the thrill is in the  collection. Don't worry! it is earmarked for posterity.

Dennis,

I'm glad to see you're active building models for yourself. A good thing.

BTW. I wouldn't give up one sheet. Balsa goes fast when you scratch build and replacing the quality of which you have is getting more difficult.
