Evo 52
« on: May 29, 2008, 09:49:08 PM »
Hi guys. Big and I have been playing with an Evolution 52. We flew it today in one of my nephew Archie's cast-offs. It is a high aspect ration 675 sq in plane that comes in at 69oz's. The engine shows a lot of promise. I put a video of the last flight of the day. I was just playing around with it. The plane is nose heavy right now so I have contracted with Big for a light weight tube muffler. The tank is a little high so it is leaning out on outsides. The lap times for this flight were 5.35 to 5.4 sec and it felt about right. 65 foot lines, 12x5 MA plastic prop ( a little small but I like to use light props for the first few flights) 7.5% fuel, Evo super plug... thta's about it. Here's a YouTube link if you're interested.

So I just hit the site. I do not see the 51. Are they doing a 40 size engine?

Nice video - let's see the entire pattern next time  ;)..please.  I'd say it definitely has promise.  Could this be the next Horizon offering, after the .36 Evo? (now due in June for anyone who is keeping track).  Looking forward to the follow up post w/ new muffler.

Thanks Pete.  It's been a while... and I just had to give it too much room cause of the nose heavy issue to feel warm and fuzzy enough to do all the tricks... Cinematography by BIG. Never can tell....... I'm looking forward to the next video too because (hopefully) it will include a tank shim and the balance point moved back a about 1.5 - 1.75 inches..... and a little more prop...... and maybe a little less nitro....... hmmmmmmmmm.......

Thanks Bill. It's the R&D that I really like to do. The good news for us C/L guys is that the 52 is responding very much like the 36.

Dave;

And when you get it all dialed in, many of us are interested to see your setup specs.

Best of luck.

I was surprised that both .36 and .52 are ball bearing engines. For some reason, I'd thought that they were sleeve bearing engines, or maybe even just crankshaft running in aluminum. Also impressed with the size of props recommended...good torque indicated.

Could you post camera information? Despite the panning, I thought this video was one of the best I'd seen...the model is very clearly visible.  y1 Steve

Yeah they have a lot of power. The 12x5 MA was comming off the ground at about 9600rpm for the 5.4 sec lap time. The video camera is a Sony digital 8mm. I wish you could see the original because YouTube compress it a lot and the sound really goes to heck.

More info on the camera would still help! Those things range from $400 to $1200. The bottom feeder might be do-able, but not the top of the line.   n~ Steve

I'll call my dad and get him to put up the model number. Wel I shimmed the tank and installed the new muffler. It is 1.4oz so it took 1.4 oz off the nose and moved the BP back to where it should be close. I won't have the plane to blame in the next session............. Here's a pic of the new muffler and the mildly modified stocker. I "dremmeled" the fins off the main body and turned the tailpiece down about .045". It took the weight down about .6oz to 2.8oz.

It IS a lot of fun,..... but.............. there's no arguing about who bobbled what maneuver when you get done. Truth of the tape and all that.... We tried the new muffler today and it was great. Same sound level as the stocker. Almost no change in the needle setting and it corrected the balance issue. Cool.
