Epiphany
« on: September 14, 2022, 03:33:20 PM »
Several years ago I built an Epiphany which was a kit by Pat Johnston.  I thought the wing design was beautiful.  I finished the model but it was destroyed in an accident before I ever got to fly it.  I ran across this picture of the wing as I was building it and the yellow on was Pat's if I remember correctly.

The Epiphany has proven to be a wonderful plane. So much so that I have made up designs that range in square inches from 202, 327 (twin), 402, 502, 557 ( single and twin), 617, and 710. The twin engine versions are a blast to fly.
Then there is the spinoff series from the 502. Now there are 12 “502” warbirds. The obvious next one was the Spitfire. Also, a Sea Fury, Mustang, P-40C, Wildcat, Hellcat, Bearcat, Bf-109, Fw-190, Ki-61 Tony, A6M Zero, and Yak-9. I built and flew the Fw-190, but after a few flights, an errant weed caught  the lines and the plane bit the dust. At least I had enough handle time to show the plane was a high performer and very easy to fly. Any one interested in any of these, feel free to contact me.

It is a beautiful design and Pat's kits are impeccable.  We live on a fixed income but once things get a little better, I will be ordering another Pat Johnston kit.  Thanks for all you do for our hobby Pat.

I have one of Pat's E-Twin 557s under construction. I can echo what Mike says, a beautiful model with a true elliptical wing. The only straight lines are the hinge lines. Even the root-to-tip taper is curved. There is a full-fuse version of this design now available. Outstanding wood selection and laser cutting, one of the finest kits I have ever seen. Will Hubin has developed a timer for this model for use with smaller and cheaper ESCs and motors.

Please what size motors does it use?

It uses two Cobra 2808-30 1000KV motors, paired with two Tempest 30-A 4S ESCs, all from Innov8tive Designs. As noted above Will Hubin has developed a timer that operates both motors and ESCs from a single timer. These are very inexpensive components and simple to program. The ESCs require a Tempest programmer, which is also simple and inexpensive.

Antone Kephart has one.  BEST flying plane in the club right now IMHO.

I've also got a twin under construction. Thanks to Antone and Scott.

The elliptical wing is much easier to assemble that it appears. Pat did an outstanding job on the design.
