Enya #3 Plug and Ni-starter problems
« on: September 02, 2019, 06:01:58 PM »
I have a few Enya #3 glow plugs, but my Sonic-Tronics ( or whatever it is) doesn't fit it very well, really hard to get off after the engine starts up. Anyone have similar problems, any solutions?  HB~>

Can you remove the igniter without the engine running? Otherwise follow righty-lefty convention.

I think it says in the instruction to never use Enya plugs, but I ground down the tip of the center electrode to a point,  and didn't have any problems after that.

I had similar problems with 2 older Sonic Tronic units but the new one I have works fine.  Easy on and easy off of Enya Plugs!  Perhaps they have fixed the problem!

I have 2 of the newer metered Sonic-Tronic battery units and they work fine on the Enya 3.
I think I remember having that same trouble years ago with the Enya 3 plug so my guess is that ST changed something to make their glow drivers better in this regard.

I just keep a Great Planes (?) spring loaded style starter battery in my box for engines that use the Enya #3 plug. It does double duty as it serves as a back should my Sonic Tronic battery unexpectedly lose its charge (which isn't often).  8)

Just checked: Backup is  a DuBro spring loaded NiCad starter battery.

The big knob on top of the Enya 3 can be unscrewed from the body of the plug.
You could try removing it to expose the threaded stud coming out the top of the plug.
It might be long enough to press up against the center contact of the Sonic-Tronic driver.

Or you could just trade those nasty plugs to me for something else. Where can you buy Enya #3 plugs?

I get them from RC Japan....other stuff too...pretty cheap and about 5 day shipping.
You'll like them!

I just ground it down on my belt sander, took a few seconds, then it was fine.

Its not as good as the Thunderbolt 4-cycle in any of my engines, but otherwise, it's a good plug and worth trying. They used to be unreasonably expensive, but now, all of them are unreasonably expensive.

I spread the grip ends a bit. Or simply put them on and take them off a few times. The ends will widen enough to release more easily. I just put an Enya 3 in an engine and used a
Sonic. First few times it needed a firm twist to release then ok. I find the ends of Sonics loosen up after extensive use. They need to be pinched in a bit when that happens. This will happen even when using narrow stemmed Thunderbolts. Loose fitting Sonic glow drivers can be a hazard.

Even though Gerry has not chimed in, he is probably too busy reading the Mueller Report, thanks for the replies!  :!
