Trophy Trainer Color Scheme

I'm starting the paint process of my new Trophy Trainer. I've decided to use Tom's original paint scheme of red and white stripes on the wing. I know on his Continental he painted the stripes on top, but the bottom panels were a checker board pattern. Did he use a checker board on the bottom of the TT? For speed and simplicity, I'm planning on continuing the stripes on the bottom, but I am curious.

The only picture I have of the original TT is attached, but only shows the top.
