Title: engine test stands
Post by: bob whitney on April 14, 2015, 08:52:09 AM

After hearing about an engine coming loose from an engine stand a couple of weeks ago and sending the person to the hospital for stitch's got me thinking ( this is the 2nd person i know of that has been hurt from an engine coming loose) . With the newer bigger engines we are now running ,maybe our test stands need to have a safty cable added like they use on combat engines.wouldnt take long and sure would up the safty factor . i had an engine come loose when i was a teen ager ,i had just stepped out of the way, .it bounced off 3 walls before it came to a stop.

I had a class II carrier engine on the stand I had just cleaned up after many flights.   Fired it up and stepped behind the engine to throttle up.   Just as I was ready to tach it the engine came loose and was gone before I could throttle back.   Seems it threw half the prop.   Only Rev Up prop I ever had that lost a blade, other than on landings.
