Hi Gents,
After teaching my son to fly a Brodak Cardinal with a Fox 35, we've just finished a RMS P-40 profile plane and it's ready for some paint and a new motor. Don't want another Fox 35 as I feel we need some more power for good stunt flying. The Cardinal is marginal at best with the Fox but has been a wonderful trainer. What's out there that is relaible??
The Fox has scared me a few times cutting out at the top of outside loops and darn near cost us the plane once. Lucky my old legs knew which way to run. LOL

Not a bad price either, 69.99 at Tower. 2 questions on this motor. Is there a tongue muffler that will fit this and does it have a 2 4 2 run?

OS LA 46

Tongue mufflers are available.

They will 4-2-4.

Mike,
The OS .46 is a grunt of a motor. You do not need to worry about a 4-2 break. Just set and forget about it.

The 46 is lighter then the .40 and a little more power. You do not have to change anything on the motor. If you are just starting back you do not even have to change the muffler. I would suggest if you have not mastered inverted flight that you turn the remote needle 90 degrees so you do not break or bend it.
Other then that I would not change a thing. If you get a NIB, run two tanks of fuel thru it, then mount it up on the plane and go fly.

Mufflers for the FP35/40 fit the LA 40/46.

Mike: Did you make the RSM P-40 profile the stock 46" WS or did you go with the 52" mod. ? If you made it stock I'd put the Fox 35 on it and put the LA 46 on the Cardinal. I have a 35FP on my RSM p-40 with the 52" WS and it has plenty of power.

Mike the cutting out you experienced was the dreaded "Fox Burp." This happens only with the side mounted engine configuration. This may be prevented by partially blocking the bypass. An easy way to do it is to insert a piece of wood in the bypass. This doesn't add any or subtract any noticeable power, it does increase the speed of the flow through the bypass and prevents condensation or pooling of the fuel in outside maneuvers.

I'm pretty sure the method to accomplish this fix has been published on this forum before but I will look for it and provide it later if you want it.

I agree the LA .46 is a more suitable engine for the Cardinal but you may want to use the fox on another model like a Ringmaster or FliteStreak.

I picked up an FP 35 on the Bay a while back and converted it to C/L. It worked so well I picked up 2 more.

Thanks for the advise everyone. I like the idea of replacing the Fox on the Cardinal. It does ok but needs some humph.. The OS sounds like the ticket either way. Simple and effective and best of all it will run on fuel my LHS always has in stock. I'll post a pic of the P-40 when it's done.

Mike: If your interested in a 35FP check the classifieds. Tom Dugan has a couple at 40.00 ea which is a good price.

By the way Mike congratulations you won the kit this month Brodak Accentor which is a copy of the Super Pow Wow.

If you go for a 35FP, be careful. They made both Steel and ABN piston & cyllinder assemblies. You can't run R/C fuel in the steel units.

For sport flying a OS La 46 is the best bang for the $$$$ Runs on low nitro 5% 22% oil . set needle valve 14 gals ago ,SAME glow plug .WEATHER .. it doesn't care Jan 1 30 degrees maybe 3 flips 70 degrees 1 flip still runs the same. have bought 2 more for the future..

Stopped at Ted's Interstate Hobbies on the way home Sunday, and noticed he has an LA 25 in the showcase, and at a very reasonable price!

I asked about the LA 46, and he said OS has discontinued the 46, and showed me the latest Great Plains distributer catalog. GP now lists only the LA 25 (in natural aluminum finish), but no LA 46 in blue, or natural finish. I knew they had dropped the LA 40, but this is the first I've heard about the LA 46.

Maybe it's a good thing you have a couple tucked away.

Tower still lists the 46 as in stock. If it was discontinued they would be the first to list it as such.

Hey, never won anything for posting to a thread before !!!

I have to say one good thing about Brodak here - recently ordered a can of Polar Grey and OD Green for the plane. Well, they sent Polar Grey and Cruiser Orange !! Called them up and offered an exchange but they said no way - keep the Orange we're sending out the OD Green today at our cost !!! 5 days later I'm ready to paint some green. I was impressed... My next plane will definitely be Orange and something.. Ha

I know someone with an ST51 in a cardinal and it flies rather nicely too. I wouldn't be afraid to put an Enya 45 in one either.

For the Cardinal, I have seen quite a few flying with a LA46. As to discontinuing them, I believe OS is knocking out their C/L versions, but if I understand correctly, the R/C (same as the C/L except for the carb) will still be available.

It is as much of a plug and play engine as you can get for not a lot of money. The other one would be the Magnum 36XLSIIA (small case) or possibly the new Evo 36 C/L engine. Both of those are reported to have a lot of usable power.

I have seen mention hre of the LA46 being capable of a 4-2 run, but a 11.5-4 APC and set in a wet 2 is the way I have always seen them run. And they do great at that!
