Title: Engine for an original Veco kit Thunderbird
Post by: Allen Eshleman on May 10, 2021, 11:01:08 AM
My brother has built a Thunderbird using the original Veco kit.  He was thinking of using an LA 25.  However, we're starting to realize that this engine may not be strong enough.  Also has available are an  Enya 35V 5225, a Brodak 40 and a Magnum 25 ball bearing.

What engine from these would you recommend?

Thanks ahead of time.

Agree with Brad - Brodak 40. Modern light purpose built engine, can run standard glow fuel Sig 10% N, 23% (50/50) oil. Prop -  APC 10.5 x 4.5 or 11 x 4. They like a bit of rpm so somewhere around 10 - 11k launch rpm. If new, they also take a while to break-in so if at first it is finicky just keep flying somewhere around 50 flights it will settle in.

Best,   DennisT

Yes, the Brodak 40 will be a good choice especially if you build the up right engine version.  That was my second full size stunt plane after I had already built a Nobler.  Both were FOX 35 Stunt powered and flew great for me back in those days.   Have I been around that long.  Still think the original Thunderbird was the prettiest design back then even with the up right engine. I am almost certain the Brodak 40 has the same dimensions as the Fox 35 which was probably what the T-Bird was designed for.
The B-40 runs great on GMA fuel and Thunderbolt idle bar plug.
It should drop right into the airplane without any hacking.

At least my b-40 dropped right in where my FOX 35 sat for many flights. D>K

Forget the modern stuff. Do a McCoy 40 Red Head. H^^

That would give that great castor odor and grease on plane.  Back in the day, I loved my McCoys. Then I discovered modern OS's, Magnums and Brodaks.  Less time flipping and more time flying.

We are going to go with the B-40.
